Do you sort .223 brass for plinking?

spent a couple hours at it tonight, and it’s a far worse chore than sorting .45 acp into LPP and SPP.

I’m thinking that nobody does it for plinking ammo, am I right?

Im not familiar with the LRP / SRP, what does this mean?

LRP = large rifle primer
SRP = small rifle primer

Sort brass? definitely not for plinking ammo. For my match ammo (NRA/CMP service rifle) the only thing that I do is keep the same headstamp together.

I sort all my .223/5.56. I save the PMC and LC brass for precision loads, most of the rest I will run mixed for general plinking loads.

Yep, never know when your plinking brass might need to be used for something other than plinking. Plus it makes me check for uglies.

I sort milspec from commercial due to the thicker cases on the milspec which will give a bit higher pressure with the same load due to reduced case capacity. I don't bother with sorting by manufacturer. If it has/had a crimped primer it goes in one pile, the non crimped in the other. Once they are reloaded like goes with like on stripper clips. That way I don't get inconstant groups due to velocity differences.

For load development, I'm OCD about everything being uniform so I can find optimum charge weight and seating depth. Once I've found that, I'll only sort between military and commercial brass.

I have it all sorted anyways, but generally if it’s not Lake City, FGMM, Hornady or some other “nicer” type, it gets stored in bulk like generic FC, CBC, PSD, and honestly I have so much of those, I don’t keep much else.

I grab FC or PSD bags for plinking loads

I’ve kinda settled on LC vs other. Have sorted out maybe 10,000 LC and set them aside, everything else is in 1,000 lots of mixed that I’ll use to plink.

Thanks all!

I used to think mil-spec always had less case capacity, but found out that is not always true. The Starline brass I bought, just to try, has slightly less capacity than LC. Not all mil-spec has the same case capacity, either.

Unless you're shooting precision from a bolt gun, where in you did some type of load development for that specific barrel, sorting brass for plinking is a waste of time. IMO/YMMV. If you like to sort brass, fine. Organziation is a wonderful thing. I keep my piles separate too because OCD. Be careful trying to convince yourself it's for accuracy.

I agree 100% with you, if I am loading for my 16" AR, especially if I know I will be shooting offhand at the indoor 25' range, I'll use whatever brass I have, mixed or not, and will use the cheap 55gn FMJ bullets.

The key to consistency is consistency. I've been chasing small groups in my 20" AR, and have had success getting sub MOA out of it. I've tried annealing. I've tried crimp and no-crimp. I've tried uniforming the flash holes. If I am going to try anything, of course I will sort my brass. I've tried a lot of different things, but in the end I don't want to spend 60 cents each for Lapua brass (not that I know it would be any more accurate). I want to use what is readily available, and the LC brass is plentiful, I basically don't pay for it since a lot of people leave it on the ground. I could use Berger bullets, but dang they are expensive. I've had good enough results with Hornady 75bthp, and can get those for ~ $0.14 each. I'm in the process now of trying to back track to find out what matters the most and what doesn't.

If I do all this for an AR, imagine how anal I would be if I start loading for 6.5 Creedmoor. I'll probably be measuring case capacity of every single case. :rolleyes:
