I've been juggling red dots around my various rifles and carbines. I ended up putting a Holosun 403(?) In a low mount on an AR9. I tried it and don't hate it. You have more of a cheek weld than chin weld, and it seems ok to me, but maybe this is a faux pas. There are no irons to co-witness. Any reason why I shouldn't do it this way?

I wouldn’t think so, IF it fits your face. A friend mounted a LVPO low on his AR. Due to the distance between the bottom of my cheek bone and pupil, I couldn’t get my eye low enough and only saw through the top 1/2 of the scope.

It really depends on the optic and the shooter and the gun.
I could see several cases where it would work and work good.
Case of a small frame shooter or child.
Case of a gun that does not use a bugger and buffer spring and tube. Using a side folder. Like a 22 LR AR
Case of a piston gun with one of the many stocks, folders

Really depends.
Its all what fits the shooter.
I see a lot of crap I would not do or have a need for. Does not say it will not work and fit the need and the shooter.

As stated, it depends on your fit. I find, when I low mount, I end up having to roll my head over to see through the optic. I prefer a more heads up configuration.
You could always add a set of angled offset irons for backup.

Make sure to try it in the prone position. The lower the rifle gets the more you will have to extend your neck to flatten out. During my neck surgery some of my vertebrae were fused together and now I cannot extend out enough to use low mounts. Other than that, if it fits you and you are happy, then run it like you stole it 😁

This didn't work out. As suggested by @Average Joe I shot it from some different positions. Nope, no good. Fortunately, I stumbled upon the high mount in my gun room so it's back to a more upright mounted position.

Lowest I use is a stock QRP2 mount with an Aimpoint PRO. It's in between co-witness and lower 1/3. I wouldn't want lower. I only use low mounts on weapons with low cheek combs like AK.

I won’t go lower than an absolute cowitness height with any optic, irons or not

Ar's butt stock height in relation to the bore is high, so most people (including me) will use a high mount for an optic. If you look at the specs for a bolt action rifle you might see a drop at comb or something like that. It might be .625 to .750 spec. The butt stock is lower in relation to the bore axis so most people will use a lower mount. Some people do find it more difficult with a lower mount in prone......I'm ok with it just so I'm not in the prone position for a long time.

You will find that sweet spot!!

No. It would not fit me at all. I even have a hard time getting my eye low enough for the open sights up on the carrying handle.
