This thread is not confined to this question, but I was wondering so why not!

Are there any drones that run off a cellphone as the controller, and are able to follow you as well? ie if I wanted to ride a dirt bike or go jetskiing or something it could follow me around and land by my phone (I assume those controllers I see aren't water resistant?)

subscribed, sounds cool.
I know they make gopro type of trackers for when youre on a motocross track or something, but not yet heard of one for a drone.
Interested.

Most of these drones are called selfie drones and some use your smartphone for control. The price varies greatly. Google selfie drones and check YouTube.

Back when I was on the Fbook someone posted a link to a drone that would do exactly what you described. So yes, there is a product somewhere that accommodates your request.

No, it's not the same as calling an AR an Assault rifle. A drone is nothing more than an unmanned aircraft by definition.

Actually if you really want to get to the bottom it is a scary term the media came up with when the freak out of FPV flying with multirotors and fixed wing started to take off and the few ruined it. This was also around the same time the .mil UAVs got the "drone" terminology due to the autonomous flying.

Coming from flying both fixed wing and multirotor for many years both LOS and FPV I stick with my previous statement of calling it a drone is like calling an AR an assault rifle.

If you disagree, well that's perfectly fine.

Agree to disagree. You can call them drones. I will never refer to them as that. Cause to me, calling them drones is the same as calling my AR and assault rifle.

This is right in my back yard, anyone going? I don't have a drone but would be cool to see.

Just noticed something....

Carolina dronz has the Autel xstar for $599 with 1 extra battery (they are currently SOLD OUT)..Then you could get the hard case for 89...For a total of $688 for the Xstar with 1 extra battery and the case.

Saves $$$ doing it that way. This is of course if the $599 deal comes with the charger...It doesn't really say.

Most of these small "drones" are quad copters. Drones is just what the unwashed masses call all flying unmanned craft.

Yeah...Only real drawback with the Autel is I'd have to get a tablet too...

I did like the removable camera option for upgrades or crashes.

You'd think as much as these things cost, the display should be part of the remote. More companies are moving toward integrated display to eliminate all the app conflicts with using customer tablets. I really like the ST16+ remote control of my Typhoon h Pro.

BTW, the best drone tablet seems to be the Nvidia Shield K1. It's bright, powerful and reasonably priced.

Concerning actual airplanes and "drones," is there a grey area when it comes to proximity or is the line exact?

I live a stone's throw from our municipal airport and I feel some of the enthusiasts fly very low, possibly too low. There's a cat right now flying overhead and he's low enough that I can see the dots between U and S on the underside of the wing. Oh, Army is on the other wing. That may be a poor perspective, but he seems awful low.

If drone flight has a legal ceiling and say, a drone is at that limit and this dude buzzes it or whatever cool aviation term is used, who's in the wrong?

I'm going back outside to enjoy the sunshine, low flying aircraft and a beer.

Read more: https://www.faa.gov/uas/faqs/

Fly in accordance with the Special Rule for Model Aircraft (Public Law 112-95 Section 336). Under this rule, operators must:

  • Fly for hobby or recreational purposes only
  • Follow a community-based set of safety guidelines
  • Fly the UAS within visual line-of-sight
  • Give way to manned aircraft
  • Provide prior notification to the airport and air traffic control tower, if one is present, when flying within 5 miles of an airport
  • Fly UAS that weigh no more than 55 lbs. unless certified by a community-based organization
  • Register the aircraft (UAS over 0.55 lbs. and less than 55 lbs. can be registered online at registermyuas.faa.gov; UAS 55 lbs. or greater must be registered through the FAA's paper-based process)

  1. Do I have to notify all airports within five miles of where I want to fly recreationally?
Yes, you must contact any airports (including heliports and sea-based airports) and air traffic control towers within five miles of your proposed area of operations if flying under the Special Rule for Model Aircraft (Public Law 112-95, Section 336).

  2. Can an airport operator object to model aircraft flights near an airport?
Yes, an airport operator can object to the proposed use of a model aircraft within five miles of an airport if the proposed activity would endanger the safety of the airspace. However, the airport operator cannot prohibit or prevent the model aircraft operator from operating within five miles of the airport. Unsafe flying in spite of the objection of an airport operator may be evidence that the operator was endangering the safety of the National Airspace System. Additionally, the UAS operator must comply with any applicable airspace requirements.

Well, I canceled my drone order. I sat here thinking about it, and I'm sure I'd fly it the first day, but once it got put back in the case, it would likely sit there untouched until I sold it or traded it for something more practical or useful.

Well, I ordered one last night and it is OTW. I imagine I'll fly it once or twice here, a couple of times at Dad's shop, once or twice over my Mom's property and then I'm sure we'll wear it out over the hunting property in NC. But just like any other hobby, I gotta find the time to do it.

Edit: And don't forget I live almost next door to the local airport. I'm sure I'll get absolutley no footage of anything airplane related. LOL.....

I love mine, I wouldn't get rid of mine but I no longer feel like or have the time to fly it. @kcult , you will love it. They are a blast. I had played with the "follow me" mode on mine and it is really neat. Post some videos once you get yours and start flying.

I had been wanting one for a while. My wife has said for years that I put too much into my 401k, etc., and that I should enjoy more of my money. That was quickly forgotten when I told her I had $900 worth of drone in the mail. LOL.

I look forward to getting it in the air to see what I can see.

I have an older laptop and I use VLC as my media player.

What do I need to watch the videos from the 4k camera? I start them, but they freeze almost immediately, although the progress bar in the player keeps moving.

Your computer video card and processor are probably inadequate, especially for 4k video. Unless you need 4k, reduce your recording to 1080p.

Technology drives technology.
