Does anyone know if there’s a ceiling on the late fees, penalties/interest for renewing an expired registration?

The registration and tags on my Jeep expired on March 31st 2020.😂

I just got it inspected today. It was out of service for over a year or so while I was restoring it and I finally put enough miles on it to reset the PCM to a “Ready Status” to get it inspected.

Thanks

Check your new plate sticker when you get it. They typically go back to the date that you should have renewed. Meaning that the new plate sticker is only good until the next renewal would have been. Benn there...done that.

Since you didnt renew last time, you prolly didnt pay the taxes either. Youll probably have a block to registering due to the unpaid taxes and theyll want the back taxes right then.

Yep. I kind of figured the property tax would be an issue.

I’m planning on renewing online of course. So I’m sure I’ll be paying the property tax penalties and so forth. I was just wondering about the DMV late fees.

I guess I’ll find out in a few days when I log on to the DMV to renew.

Interested to hear what happens. I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle back in the road that has sat in the garage for a few years. The taxes and penalties scare me.

I’ll tag you in this thread when I get the renewal completed online. Since I just got it inspected today, I’ll try to renew on Friday if the inspection has been uploaded to the DMV by then. If not, I’ll try again on Monday.

I normally go ahead on line to do the renewal as soon as I get home from getting mine inspected, so I don't forget to do it. Have never had an issue with it not being there.

That’s good to hear. Early on when the NC DMV started online renewals, it took a few days before I could renew online.

I’ll try to do it tomorrow based on your post. Thanks for the input.

This happened to me one time. The DMV gave me a new tag, when I asked about taxes the lady told me that was between me and the county. Could have recently changed but this has been a couple years ago.

Yep. Just this past Friday I had mine inspected. Walked out the door to head home ~8:10am, and paid for my tag/taxes sometime before 9am. It’s instant as far as I know these days.

I’d log on and renew right now if it weren’t for the fact that I’m just not in the mood to deal with anything related to the government at the moment.😂

I’ve been trying to renew mine...expired 7/20....online but keep getting an “sorry, there’s a problem” response. I’ll get around to the tag office eventually. Officially, I’ve been reluctant to go because of the ‘rona.

I just found out that in order to renew, I have to go to the local DMV license plate office as well.

I’m assuming that they are going to have me turn my old plate in and get a new one, and pay the property taxes and late fees but I’m not sure.

I’ll be taking the appropriate tool with me when I go in order to pull the plate and install a new one if that turns out to be the case.

If you don’t know of a good location, try the kernersville office at the address below. That’s the only place I’ll go now, because they are so easy to work with compared to other offices that make up rules, hassle, act rude, etc.

This happened to me in feb (was not expired). when I went to the plate office, they said it was because I needed to be given a new plate as part of my renewal. Not sure why it wouldn’t work online and them just ship me the new plate? Or why the online form couldn’t explain what was wrong, and to go to the office?
Anyway, there was no issue renewing it at the office, where they handed me the new plate

Thank you very much sir. I used to go to the West Market St. location in Greensboro. But I’m finding out more and more after living at my current location for 16 years, that everything is closer and more convenient in Kernersville.

Mine did say something about a new plate required every 7 years? Waiting to see if a new one shows up, or just a sticker.

Just went through this, online registration said the plate was old and I would get a new one, it did this automatically. Completely new plate (new tag number) arrived at the post office with the new registration. Strangely enough I renewed another vehicle at the same time that had a 8-9 year old tag and they just sent me a sticker. The sticker only vehicle is an 86 model, not sure if age of the vehicle plays into this or not, I thought it was strange.

Be sure to let is know if you have to pay the taxes on the spot at the DMV. I had to, but sounds like @hp468 didnt have to.
Im curious to know which way it is for you.

Will do sir. I’m about to head over there in about 20 minutes. I’ll post a followup.

Okay first of all,

@DangerRuss

Just an fyi, the N. Main Kernersville license plate office is currently by appointment only. You can make an appointment online. Again, thanks for tip about that office. Going forward, that will be my office to go to if needed.

@frakncylons

I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. My original invoice from the DMV for the registration that was due March 31st 2020 was for $90.32 including property tax. Today, a year and one month late, the bill to get my registration renewed was $115.77 including property tax.

@draco88

See above. I did pay the property tax today at renewal. The DMV states that property tax on a vehicle cannot be paid at the county tax office.

Now, all of the above said, the DMV agent that waited on me was a new hire and her trainer walked away from her station in the middle of my transaction.

I am quite certain she missed something. The reason my renewal amount went up $25.00 was not because of any late fees or penalties for late registration or late property tax, it was only because the appraised value of my Jeep increased $2620.00.😂

I find it hard to believe that the county wasn’t going to nail me on property tax that was a year and a month delinquent. I didn’t even get hit with a late fee for the renewal.

😎

Here's me after some text messages with @DangerRuss 😂🤣

I guess I went to the wrong office in Kernersville today. In my above post I mentioned that the Kernersville Driver's License Plate office is by appointment only. DangerRuss texted me and told me his mother and brother had just gone there this past Saturday and Monday to renew their stuff and had no issue. Well I told him that something must have happened because the place was locked down and you couldn't get in without an appointment.

Fast forward just a bit ago. I'm sitting in the parking lot at NAPA on Gallimore Dairy Rd. and I get a text from Richard:

"Hey Dave! Do you think you went to the drivers license office around the side of the building? The license plate office is in the middle of the building facing Main St. Here is a picture:"

Patrick Hammer Head.gif

Yep. That's what I did. Drove to Kernersville and wasn't paying any attention and then drove all the way to Greensboro and stood in line for 45 minutes. Oh well. At least I know where the correct office is now.

Ok, so a question.

The $115.77 covered what was due back in 3/20, right?

Do you not also owe something as of 3/21, or did I miss that part?

Or is the master plan going forward to just pay property taxes every other year? 🤣

Uh.. I'm not sure what you're asking. Yesterday I renewed the registration for a vehicle that had expired tags from March 31st 2020. In addition to the expired tags, the property taxes were also delinquent. Yesterday I went to the DMV and paid the necessary fees to renew the registration and get a new tag for this vehicle and pay the property tax that was due.

The original invoice from the DMV for registration renewal and property tax that was due March 31st 2020 was for $90.32. I never paid that invoice because the vehicle was out of service. Today I paid $115.77 to bring this vehicle back to a legal status with a valid registration. I received a new license plate with a sticker showing an expiration of 04/22.

If I owe something more as of 3/21 then I guess I must have missed that part.

Maybe you got lucky. A buddy parked his truck because if needed repairs for over two years I think. When he went to get it legal he had to pay two years of taxes and two years of registration. He paid the first delinquent year and they sent him a sticker that was already expired.

I was asking if it was like the situation @dman24 described.

You owed taxes as of March ‘20. If you had paid those on time, you would’ve owed them again in March ‘21.

I wasn’t sure how it worked...but assumed you’d have to pay both to get caught up. Sounds like you didn’t, but dman’s friend did. Circumstances may be different, I don’t know.

Only thing I have close to it is the Jeep I canceled the plate on. It became a trailer queen for off-road trips only, so I didn’t pay for a plate...but also didn’t get a tax bill. But I never went back to renew a plate (or get a new one issued), so that’s where mine really shifts.

My understanding is that when you don’t have a plate on it, you are supposed to list it on your annual county property taxes. We get a paper form from Chatham county each year asking us if anything like that has changed - if you add it there, I guess they’d start including it in annual property tax bill? But I don’t know how many people would actually list it on the form.

Dunno. Sold it last year after at least 15 years of no plates. But it never moved (not that that would matter) for the last 13.

That's what supposed to happen. You also have to list stuff like trailers with the multi year tags. I have 2 old vehicles that have not run in almost 50 years and 3 trailers that I have to list yearly.

Same here. I have a few trailers with permanent tags, plus a 74 international truck with no tag

Yep. I think she messed up. I’m quite sure I really owe more than what they billed me yesterday.

Back in February, I was 30 days late renewing my wife’s Explorer through the mail. The DMV sent my check back with another recalculated bill that was quite a bit more than the original amount that was due 30 days earlier.

Like I stated in a previous post, the girl waiting on me was a new hire that had a veteran worker helping her. The trainer walked away in the middle of my transaction about the same time the girl had a question.😂

So like @dman24 stated, I got lucky.😎

They will probably send you a bill in the mail for the remainder and will prevent it from being renewed again until it is all paid.

Wouldn't surprise me at all.
