This tree has been growing in the back for years but has never had berries on it. This year it is loaded to the point the branches are breaking with these winds. What is it and is it ediable or worth taking a chance? I thought hackberry but don't think so.

TIA -Tod

Can they be eaten or toxic to dogs?

Dogs can eat ripe ones, just not too many or they'll get the shits. They have a vegetable flavor to them.

Side note, we had an old lab/rottweiler/shepherd mix, a damn 160lb beast of an animal that would wade into the blackberry brambles and eat every last damn ripe blackberry out of there. Best part is you would see her big old horse-sized ass sticking out of a quivering pile of bushes, tail swinging like a helicopter blade in pure reverie eating all the blackberries. She taught this to her German Shepherd buddy that would do the same, that taught it to her Aussie/Sheltie friend, who showed her nuisance of a comrade the heeler. I imagine this summer the heeler will be teaching the 5th generation of blackberry gobbler how to wade into the thorns and come back with tart, delicious gold.

i planted a small tree like 3 years ago and havent had anything yet. the deer keep eating the tree down before it can grow. I also planted raspberries and the bunnies won't let a single cane grow.
consider yourselves lucky.

Thanks all for the help and comments. I think I'll give some syrup a shot. It's a volunteer tree that has been growing for 10 yrs or so. I don't remember any other time it has had berries. The birds sure love them. I put my tent out to dry and clean out after the fishing trip to Cape Lookout and they crapped all over it purple.

lol that's funny. The current pup, a Welsh Springer steals my cucumbers just before they're ready to pick. I couldn't figure out why they were disappearing off the garden fence and one day I saw him sniff all of them, look around to make sure no one was looking, pick one out, and then gently grab it and back away pulling it off the vine. He then trotted over to the shade and ate it all proud of himself.

I've got a big Mulberry out back. The berries aren't bad but the tree is such that picking them is not super easy. During my house warming we used a bunch of them to try and make bad moonshine not so bad. It didn't work.

Dogs are the best!

Those are mulberries. They're similar in appearance to blackberries. Mulberries have a green stem, even when ripe.

And the leaves are different between the two, also.

And you need to be careful picking blackberries, as the plant has thorns scattered throughout.

Both are excellent berries to eat, with the mulberries being a bit sweeter.
