Educators from 12 states take 3-day firearms course

"Never in a million years would I have guessed that one response to what happened in our town would be to arm teachers," Clements said. "It's absurd ... God, can you imagine if children were hurt by you in that situation? How would you live with yourself?"

Ummm...better than if I stood there and watched somebody kill all 30+ in my room?

I agree people that do not want to carry should not be made to carry. They don't have what it takes. Honestly, a lot of the folks that carry won't have what it takes.
The dynamic atmosphere of a shooting like that would be an overwhelming experience for a teacher.

One would hope the fact that there were potentially armed people in the schools.... Would deter the homegrown folks. Not so much for the committed, terrorist type attackers.

I always find this argument ironic: you will leave your child alone for 6+ hours a day with a teacher, but then act as if you can't trust said teacher, and they are a threat to the safety of children because they are armed.

Check out the book Days of Wrath if you haven't already.

Good training does wonders. I remember not know what to do in an emergency and then being trained as a Beach Life Guard and emt and emergencies, even my first stroke (theirs, not mine), we pretty calm, by the numbers afairs with no panic. My first Solo flight in an airplane, same thing. No fear and in control. I think it would amaze people what 3 days of training does to clarify your thinking when it's happening.

Training is like a Rolodex of information. When a situation occurs, it gives you something to reference to and a set of procedures to follow. Continued training ingrains the patterns in the mind and body do they can work "automatically" and with familiarity. "I've seen this before. This is what I do." This frees the mind to make decisions on the situation.

"A step in the right direction."

Indeed.

Another step in the right direction would be going back to "...shall not be infringed."
