I've never seen one in the garage ceiling on a gfci. No reason it should be.Alright folks I have an update. Based on the two circled it would appear the outlet in the middle of the garage in the ceiling only has one set of wires. It's also weird because another outlet in the garage only has one set of wires.
So the one I think is the next hop is the outlet under the house. There's 4 sets of wires because it also runs a light switch/light.
I've replaced all but one outlet with brand new ones. I took the meter to the screws on each outlet. Checks out!. I'm going to change the last one tomorrow.
My current thinking is changing that one out won't matter but it's worth a shot.
At this point I'm not sure what the issue is unless it's in the panel but that's beyond my comfort zone or a hidden junction box...
I haven't checked but I assume my garage outlets are on a GFCI breaker and that the outlets in the ceiling (for openers) would be on the same circuit. No?I've never seen one in the garage ceiling on a gfci. No reason it should be.
The ones on the wall may very well be.I haven't checked but I assume my garage outlets are on a GFCI breaker and that the outlets in the ceiling (for openers) would be on the same circuit. No?
Yup...I just checked and the ceiling outlets are on a different breaker. The ones on the wall may very well be.
But dont remember ever seeing one on the ceiling on gfci
Sounds like you might want to confirm that everything you think is on one circuit, actually is on one circuit. If it's not, the tail you've been chasin' is on the wrong dog!
Yup...I just checked and the ceiling outlets are on a different breaker.
I think I need to talk to @Scsmith42 about borrowing his line tracer so I can at least pinpoint the problem. I'm 3 outlets away from replacing everything...
I did not with the power on but I did put a meter to each side of the screws with the power off to check. The ohms went to zero like it was supposed to. I've heard of GFCI outlets being bad but it would be suspect that it's doing the same thing as the last one. Typically, I see they're dead or trip not stay green and pass power.I have bought gfci receptacles that were bad out of the box.
I'm sure you have but ......
Did you confirm that you have power on the load side of the receptacle at the screws that should feed the next in line.
That gadget is $16 with a HF coupon. It's a handy thing to keep in your toolbox.I think I need to talk to @Scsmith42 about borrowing his line tracer so I can at least pinpoint the problem. I'm 3 outlets away from replacing everything...
Thanks! I feel like im really close. Made another discovery that I should have checked first. The red to be confirmed outlet on the diagram... I should have checked it before. I will check it today. This HAS to be the next hop from the GFCI. It's a straight shot to it. It would make sense that it feeds the outside outlets. I'll report back today what I find. As far as logical chain of events this outlet is on our screened in porch. The wind was blowing so bad the rain came down sideways which probably hit that outlet with water even though its covered with a plastic box.Chris, I can stop by this weekend.
