Awakened at 0-dark-thirty by a loud buzzing sound. Initially thought "oh-%!#@ the AC is going out!" Checked it, fine. Realize it is probably a cricket in the house. Eventually track the bugger down to being inside the under-stair cubby space that we use as our firearms safe. Sure enough, after pulling out a few rifle cases and boxes of ammo, I find that the blighter is in there, but I realized that I hadn't anything in hand to kill-or-capture the critter. So ... I open up the nearest ammo box; take out a plastic case of 22LR; and whammo.

So yeah, took an entire 100-round box of 22LR to kill a cricket.

Ah, you mean this?

Nope. Neither was the miscreant wearing tails; top hat; vest; cravat; and carrying an umbrella:

Sort of difficult to call the space a safe: it's a small cubby under the turn-back stairs: I asked our landlord (we rent the house) to install a deadbolt on the small door so that we might use it as a gun/ammo "safe." Definitely not cricket-proof though. I'm going to have to have a serious word with the spiders that hang about the house at night, however. If they're not up to the job of home defense, I've got a broom handy.

Tsk, tsk... Should have used a shotgun.

My wife wants me to kill any critter that dares run across the floor, all except a cricket. Says it's bad luck or something.

Those and wolf spiders, I'll usually sweep them into my hand and toss out the back door.
