PDI was sued this week by the EPA to the tune of 1.1mil, with the new legislations that the EPA has pushed the deleting industry is now dead.
The way it reads and the way it seems that it is going to be enforced is that it doesnt matter if it is off road or on road use it is no longer allowed. In one fail swoop one sell out and new legislations destroyed an industry.

Fastfoward to 3:45 for the details

Newer trucks have a bunch of emissions crap on them that cause a lot of problems so people would delete those things off the truck and out of the computer.

So I left off an S, but yes newer diesels have a intense after treatment system on them and it causes nothing but issues. Semi trucks also have them and repairing that system and related issues is probably 65% of our business.

It's terrible on my trash trucks. Everything is stop and go so they never get a chance to get up to temp to run a re-gen. The last 2 trucks I bought came out of Phoenix AZ, they frame off refurb the trucks so I was able to buy and 06 and a 07. But it's not like there is an endless supply of those, eventually I'll be forced to have all my trucks have that crap on there.

What kind of enforcement can they actually do to the average guy. I know on commercial vehicles you can’t do a delete because of the fed inspections but the average guy doesn’t go through that. They busted Harley Davidson a few years ago for their tuner and exhaust systems as well.

You have to have a yearly "inspection" in most states. If you fail the emissions or visual check for the OE parts they can fail the inspection. Fix it or you don't get your tags renewed.

I'm not surprised. All the big manufacturers are introducing big cubic inch gas motors. This I believe is a sign signaling they are getting tired of meeting the BS standards for emissions requirements for diesel engines. These kids that think its funny to smoke a group of bicyclists or motorcyclists hasn't helped the case for modified diesels here in NC. These bicyclists are often people in positions of power in the city, state and county or can put pressure on these officials.

I believe a properly built diesel that has minor emissions stuff would be better than what's on the market currently. Better fuel mileage means less fuel burned and millions of gallons saved and not burned into the atmosphere.

I know a guy who does his own inspections, everything is on the truck but the filter gutted and it’s turned off in the computer. Delete is around $4k but having the filter replaced cost that much and in a non highway stop and go truck you’ll be doing that every 3-4 months.

same as deleted catalytic converters on gasoline engines. Find you a good 'inspector' or move to a county without emissions tests.

They started putting this garbage on tractors a couple years ago, seems to be slightly better executed than road vehicles, judging by troubles so far. Not surprised to see the off road "exemption" go.

Find an inspection station with an owner who is a drag racer or hot rodder. Took my '92 T-Bird in (not even remotely 'legal') & hadn't washed my numbers off the back windows. Dude hands me my sticker & congratulated me on my run, the previous Sunday.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but if you just deleting software, can you just install it get your truck inspected and then delete it rather quickly?

diesel pickup trucks over a certain weight don’t have emissions inspections, only safety and visual. 99.99999% of the people doing the visual either don’t do it or wouldn’t know what they’re looking at if they did.

But, if they are going after the people manufacturing the equipment and computer programs you need to delete this crap then it will kill the average persons ability to do it.

For those not in the know diesels have a couple of things on them that have never ever worked correctly or efficiently, kill fuel mileage and cost a lot of money to maintain, all in the name of air quality. Which it doesn’t effect by much and IMO does more harm than good since you can burn less fuel when you take that crap off.

One is the EGR and the second is the DEF fluid injection system.

Both are exhaust related items. Both have major flaws.

I wonder in 10 or 20 years they will find some medical condition linked to the DEF fluid.

I think its going to get better with time. Just like the 70's and 80's sucked the life out of engines with their emissions crap, but modern gas engines are 400+ horsepower and cleaner than ever.

Its diesel's turn to suck. But eventually they'll get a lot better.

When I lived in AZ I had to get my diesel truck "emissions" tested every year. Since there wasn't really any emission test they could do on a diesel, but they still wanted their $30 fee, they did an opacity test on the exhaust.

    Yeah.

They hookup a optical sensor to the tailpipe, have you mat the accelerator, and they check the amount of black in the exhaust.

    Sounds racist to me ....

As long as my salary is part of the 1% left, I am good with this. Seriously though, I work at the EPA, and drive a fully deleted VW diesel. I dont do anything with the hippies in the emissions area though, just software stuff.

'02 or so, but I'd think the basic premise would be the same? Do they run some kinda scan on 'em? None of our 4-wheeled vehicles are modded at all, so I wouldn't know. I'd think that absent some computerized tattletale scan, that there are still performance friendly shops out there, who'll look the other way.

Motorcycles just get a visual once over & a quick horn, lights & blinkers check. As long as yer not running straight pipes, aftermarket exhaust is a non-issue.

I talked to DMV inspector last year that mentioned that new laws where comming for diesels in NC when he came to check up on us. It sounded like they are trying to make it like a emmisions inspection on a gas burner now. The equipment must be there and they will hook into your trucks computer. No pass no tags.

It’s prob not any liquor cycles or really that many cyclists (though I do know a few that are lawyers) that have that much power but it’s prob people in cars around you that witness your “fun” act that leads to changes to your “fun”.
