I visited the coin show in Wilmington today and was shown a series of Chinese fake Morgan 'silver' dollars and some other 'antique' coins that are being produced in China. They are made from base metals but are worn, dirty, and aged to my untrained eye st least to look just like a real Morgan dollar. The dealer said that they are even faking alledged silver quarters now. A quick tell is to ring a coin against a true silver coin, the fake will sound dead with no ring to it. The weight will also be off. The rim serrations may be uneven, or on some examples the line where the two halves are pressed together are visible. Others are so good a special optical tool is needed to examine it.

Be careful out there!

That ring is the ticket. Last quarter I found I get in change from my buddy at his contract PO. We both heard it when it hit my hand. He was not happy. I got more back in the change than I paid for the postage. lol

But not surprised. Can't have anything nice anymore.

At the last Hickory gun show I was at the coin guys table, Zeb ( Green, I think is his last name ). There was another guy at his table who just had him test some Morgans he had bought elsewhere. Sure enough, fake. He was not happy. I guess the moral of the story is know who you're buying from.

Saw a video where they’ve been able to fool the sigma metalytic testers with fake Eagles. The ping test and calipers showed it was fake. I was scammed on eBay once with fake krugerrands, buyer protection reimbursed me but it was learning experience.

I bought this several years ago. Its a chinese fake. I think it cost me $2. I wanted to see what they looked like. It doesn't sound right when its dropped. It doesn't have the right "ping" The details are way off. But, if you were looking through a bunch of coins quickly, it might fool somebody.

I'd pay a few dollars for a fake, just to have for comparison.
