Took a long trip today with @Barbie and @hp468 to pick up a 1976 GMC pickup that my wife’s @Tommiegirl grandparents bought new. It was an uneventful trip with the exception of the thermostat sticking once. This truck is in incredible condition to be 47 years old. We drove it four hours home from almost the Virginia line, and had a great time! Many thanks to Mikey and Bobbi.4EAFA343-CABF-4681-874E-B7EA716A77AE.jpeg61745373-92E3-4163-80B9-CC2E0AAF23A9.jpeg

Oh man! That’s pretty much what Grandpa’s last truck Please do not say it’s a 3 on the tree In-line 6 also …

bucket seats are the a2 grip of the automotive world - made to fit everybody okay, but don't fit anybody well.
At least with a bench seat you could put your own pillows on the seat. that doesn't work as well in a bucket.

Congrats on the square body,, these are high demand trucks especially as nice as yours. This is mine that I've had for like forever.. Custom home made camo paint job, 454 baby, 4:10 gear posi.. Can pass everything on the road except a gas station.

I’m guessing we got 10-11 mpg on the way home, as it was quite thirsty!

yeah, thats about right.. Check your ignition timing and make sure the advance is working correctly. These old chevy engines weren't known for their gas mileage since back then they weren't driven very far and no one really bought a truck or car and cared about gas mileage. You got lucky ,, that's a well cared for truck. These old things would rust out sitting in a garage.

That's awesome! And 12mpg is good, my 09 only gets 14. Hopefully you can make more memories in it and pass it along when you're done with it. Love those square body trucks.

It’s got some rust in the usual places, but not too bad. I’m planning on sandblasting a few spots and trying to save the front fenders. Mostly on top of the wheel wells.

Get yourself a rust converter product that has Phosphoric acid in it. It goes by many brand names and I like it in a hand held spray bottle for better coverage. Spray it under all your wheel wells or any place you see rust and it convert the rust back to steel and prevent any more rusting even if it gets wet. Since its an acid, do not get it on any paint , chrome, stainless or glass. Try not to breathe in the spray , will dent your smelling capability for a day or so. If it gets on skin, no biggie , just wash it off.
There are a lot of companys on line that sell any part you might need for that old truck for some good prices. You can buy any part you need for that old truck from a lock knob to a fender.

That’s my plan. The floorboards are in good shape, as is the bed. The truck was always parked in a barn until the last two years, when my my mother in law got it, so it’s been outside for two years.

A thirsty 4 barrel? Those year 350’s have good innards I’d run some Sea Foam thru the oil system to clean out as much sludge in the system as possible (especially in the pan), freshen up the easy gaskets, wires, etc and then work on a good tune. If you really are going to drive it look for the leaks in the harder to reach areas as you can and if you can stand a $1K investment swap out the carb for something like the Holley Sniper FI kit … easier to tune … better mpg … better starting and drivability.

I ran two cans of Sea Foam when I filled it up for the trip home. Accelerator pump in the carb is pretty much worn out, so a rebuild is in the works. This truck is original except for a GM replacement crate 350, so I’m gonna stay with the carburetor.

Try adding a can to the oil right before you change it. Run the engines 15 to 20 minutes at temperature and drain the oil … and a good part of any “stuff” that has settled in the oil system (especially the oil pan).

Went over to @hp468 and @Barbie house today, and we did some belt tightening and general inspection. We’ve decided the 55k on the odometer may very well be correct. Everything is too tight and correct for a truck that’s tripped the odometer. Everyone in @Tommiegirl family that could tell the history of this truck has passed away. If only this truck could talk….

Bring that around next time you come by my dad's place, you can park it in the shade of my truck.

Schweet truck!

I too was able to keep a squarebody in the family. Long story short it was the wife's Grandpa's truck. I started a restoration a while ago and life got busy and it hasn't progressed like I hoped. But it is getting new springs, shocks and toe rod ends this weekend.

Those wheels don't do much for me personally, but you've done an excellent job with that truck so far.

Looks like it’s coming along well!

Scored a set of OEM dog dish hubcaps. They were dirty, but cleaned up nicely! When I was growing up, everyone but the farmers (my family)ditched these hubcaps and bought white or chrome wheels.

Chevy hubcaps are much more common than GMC, therefore the GMC caps are more expensive. I got lucky and got a good price on these. Used to hate the look of these caps, but the older I get, the more I like them.

Awesome name for a grandpa’s truck!

Hot tip I heard was to first push the front of the hood towards the windshield first instead of just yanking down on it. Works pretty good for me

@Tommiegirl was going through the truck today and found a folder with all the original paperwork. Sales receipts, maintenance records, and anything else that has been done to the truck. I’m figuring that the paperwork adds value, and will also be very interesting to read.

Just now seein this post and that is a sweet ride. There is a brown truck, that looks very similar, that I pass every time we go to church. It looks absolutely mint. Like the guy who owns it has never driven it more than 10 feet from garage to driveway in decades. I've told my wife that if I ever see a "for sale" sign on it, I will be trying to get it, or at least stopping to see what deal I can get.

Haven’t posted on my truck in awhile, but have made a bit of progress. It now has an Edelbrock AVS2 four barrel carb and air cleaner, and Weiand Stealth intake. This really woke the old girl up performance wise. Next step is a set of true dual exhaust.
