We have been getting Flock Blocks from Tractor Supply http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pro...h-recipe-25-lb
It is good to have when we are going to be out of town for a few days or like now when weather is bad and don't have to worry that chicken and turkeys are not out scratching around. It also relives boredom for them so they don't pick on each other as much.
Well at $14 each they are not super expensive but I like to save where I can for more important things like guns!
Today as I was going thru Facebook, I saw where a friend of a friend made a birdseed wreath. So off to goggle land I went and found different recopies for homemade flock blocks. The birdseed wreath use gelatin, flour and corn syrupy as the binder. I had all of these on hand so I stirred one up for the wild birds.
But what I plan to do is make my own flock blocks. Scratch grain is cheap, got leftover seed from out parrots, small bags of flour/ corn meal/ breader that don't have enough to use in another baking, out of date cat food, and any thing other that they will eat will be added. I hope to fine some molasses bulk on-line or on craiglist. Most of the fake flock blocks use old bread and eggs to bind. Some add fat/ oil, but I might not go that route do to attracting coons or possums.
So any tried to do this? I will do photo as I get to the making of them
