If you ever want to geek out on WAY too much detail on 1911 development this video is for you. Part of a series from C&Rsenal who, for those have not heard of them, has tons of great content.
They have videos of the 1902, 1903, 1905 as well and worth watching. I find it interesting how much development went into the design. The 1909 was a complete redesign and not at all like the 1907. No 1907s were "converted" to 1909s.
The 1909 featured the first tilting barrel, single link, and forward slide dismount that we recognize in the 1911. The 1909 also brought the straight line, one-piece sliding trigger that we know and love as well as the familiar internal extractor.
The 1907 retained the rear slide dismount, twin links...one fore and one aft...and the non-tilting, "parallel ruler" type barrel engagement of the previous 1900, 1902, and 1905 models.
The grip angle of the 1909 was the same as with the previous models...called the "Straight Handle" by Browning, changed in 1910 to the familiar "Angled Handle" of the 1911.
Which lays waste to the belief that many have of Browning disappearing into a room and emerging 6 months later with a 1911 pistol.I find it interesting how much development went into the design.
