I have a .22 can just lounging around and it wants to be on a bolt action rifle, for squirrels and such.

I don't have visions of using this gun for anything other than a walk through the woods, filling up a bucket with tree rats, or at least that's how I would like to think it'll go.

Would a sub $300 Savage fit the bill? I have a couple of Marlins, but I'm not terribly interested in having either modified for this purpose.

Yes. Find a threaded Savage Mk II. It’s performance is all out of proportion to its cost.

Almost bought one if this this week…you can buy it instead!

The B22 is essentially a MKII with a better stock and magazines for just a little more $. The MKII has a crappy polymer stock most people replace with something stiffer but heavier. The B22 also has a polymer stock but it's better/stiffer right out of the box and still lightweight. The MKII magazines are an old crappy design and known to eventually fail and/or rust, the B22 mags are rotory like Ruger 10/22 mags.

Just like the MKII, the B22 comes in an FVSR model which is threaded for a suppressor. I've had one for a year and love it. I think some of the very early ones had some kind of issue with the bolt that turned some people off, but mine has been flawless.

I second what @cubrock said. A Savage Mk II FVSR would be perfect for your walk through the woids needs. Like @Flashpoint said, the stock aint all that. But, if all you are doing is woods walking and rat killin, you shouldnt need to change the stock. Its accurate enough, light enough, and completely capable for that application. I absolutely loved mine...when it worked.
The issue flash is speaking of in the earlier ones was an issue of extraction. Mine would extract about five rounds before refusing to extract anymore. Tried all manner of things including sending it back. It took nine months or so, but Savage finally replaced it. I was kind of soured on them by tgis point, so I promptly sold it. Anyway, I think they got those issues figured out. I havent heard of them in a long time. I think youd be good now.

I'd think you'd need a B series to get a threadable barrel, wouldn't you?
I do dearly love my threaded Mark II BTVS! Fugly yet remarkably comfortable thumbhole stock and all.

Wow! Had no idea those were priced so low!

Even less for some of the other colors. But that one does include shipping.

I have the fvsr and bought it for the same reason, it's also for sale. Great gun and I have 2 other savage 93 sumpthins... one in 17 hmr and the other in 22lr. Both heavy target barrels, 20" I believe. I hunt squirrels with my rws air rifle in 22 or my bl-22 and cci quiets. That being said I'd say from personal experience, you'll be happy with any savage bolt gun.

The MKII and B22 both have FVSR models that are threaded.

Savage really has their rimfire act together. They're producing some high quality stuff at affordable prices.
