We recently started using one that my wife bought (from another potter) and I will say that it works really well. It keeps butter soft without turning rancid (turning dark and tasting off). Instead it remains light yellow in color, soft in texture, and tastes like butter. It works by using a water seal to keep the air out and I change the water every morning while making coffee.

Growing up, my family would always keep butter in the kitchen cabinet, which I did, and still do find to be kind of gross, especially when it turns dark yellow and looks oily.

If you have a deep enough conventional butter dish, you can do the same thing by mashing the butter into the lid and putting water in the dish.

If you haven’t tried one, you might want to give it a try.

My wife has been using those for years. She has bought many for gifts. I hate hard butter and those things are perfect. She also will sit a ice cube or two in the tray sometimes when its open for a long time. A great product for the table. And a great gift idea.
