Frog lube…I thought it was dead

ATF is supposed to have some penetrating or high cohesion properties doesn't it? I forget what makes it different.

Leave out the gear oil and that's what I've had for 10yrs.

So why do you add the gear oil, to thicken it up?

Years ago It was splained to me by a very knowledgeable fella you don’t know…
ATF is basically 10W oil with friction additives and a bunch of detergent. The detergent’s job in motor oil and ATF is to keep the carbon & trash from depositing in the engine/transmission.
 
Anyways, those of you who got on the frog lube bandwagon ain't got nothing on me......
Young 20 something year old me jumped on the FireClean bandwagon.... That stuff was
GARBAGE! I put it in an AR and a BerettaM9 and left it for about a year, both were seized
up. I had to disassemble everything and throw it into a sonic cleaner. It also stained or tarnished
the anodizing on that AR lower.

Man, I have one busy day at work and miss checking the forum and this is what happens. Nearly got Derek banned, which would have been a win for all of us in the basement.


Stop making gun cleaning complicated. Brake cleaner, motor oil and Axle Grease will solve all your issues. I'm using text to speech, and it must think axle grease is a person.

Aww crap, now I’m going to invoke my SpecOps friend... When we had the farm he’d come out bringing thousands of rounds to practice & run my son’s & I through some drills, good times.
He left me a bottle of FireClean saying that’s what they we re using, it really helped with cleaning the carbon out of suppressed ARs. I’ve been a fan of CLP for decades & mixed the two 1/2&1/2. Never had a problem using that in any gun. But I’m no operator, YMMV.

I have been a brake clean and CLP guy since forever. A year or so ago a buddy turned me on to the green Lucas gun lube. Works great in ARs and belt feds, but not so much in AKs with BFAs. 50 rounds from clean to consistent ftf malfunctions. It's only the second craziest thing I've seen lube wise. (Insert lube pun here). Back to CLP and zero problems.

I'll throw out an operator drop for my first craziest. I wouldn't have believed it in a million years but a buddy of mine that I work with swears by WD-40 for belt fed guns. Loves the little spray cans and says he would spray down a pig during a gunfight. No reason for me to doubt him, 100% real deal, straight shooter. In my background WD-40 was only good for one thing, washing dirt.

Makes sense…

Just a shot in the dark, here, but I imagine if WD gets hot/stays hot, it probably works pretty good.

It’s when it has a chance to sit, it stagnates and gums things up, especially in cooler/cold temps.

Without invoking any SF SEAL Ranger Recon creds, I’ll just add that I mixed up a gallon of this stuff a few years ago, still going strong. King Richard told us to use STP, right?

Seriously, this mix has served me well from 1911’s to ARs, to M1a, to S&Ws. Slick, but just a tad sticky.

It was advertised as a lube version of Ed’s Red. Not a cleaner, like the original. A lube. I put it on with a small artist’s brush, or a toothpick for a “drop.”

That concoction has been around for yyyeeaarrrsss and has been tested to work. Plus it goes a long way.

Yup, I should have put a date on that jug. I mixed that up, and bought a tube of Mobil 1 synthetic grease at the same time. It was a LONG time ago. Pretty much set for life, when it comes to firearms lube now.

I got drunk with a couple of SAS guys who were friends of a friend, does that count?

It was them and some Royal Marines. My (at the time) borderline-alcoholic day-drinking self looked like a baby compared to the amount of booze those guys put away. It was amazing and terrifying and just being there made my liver hurt.

And the boathouse at Hereford is white with green trim.

Did they use frog lube?
 
Froglube is the debbil. I despise the stuff, tossed it all a good while ago.

Strike 1. Aluminum frame Kimber. Slide caused galling on the frame lugs. Sent it back and they said needed to use grease (no mention in the manual.. figured it's a Kimber thing) froglube isn't grease...

Strike 2. 30°ish and windy day at the range. Single six was gummed up. Sat it on dash with heat until I could wipe it down. Shot a pump shottie for a few magazines. Went back to the single six for a bit. Picked up the shotty again... Basically felt full of molasses. (Yes I followed the directions of heat, apply, wipe excess...) basically done with the stuff.

Strike 3. 28" Mossberg barrel takeoff. Followed the directions from froglube for long term storage. Stored in back of safe in humidity controlled room for a couple years.

Remember it and pull it out. Covered in surface rust and a TON of deep pits. Even some rust in the bore and seized choketube. All UNDER the freaking lube🤯🤬 which seems like it turned rancid. Mind you nothing else in there for as long or longer with normal lube has even a spec.

Pretty sure that barrel is ruined. If this were a different thread I'd express how I really feel about that garbage😑

NEVER AGAIN...

Random question for those that use one of the motor oil/ATF/gear oil/etc type mixtures. Do they settle out when sitting on the shelf for awhile? Or are they close enough that a good shake when you concoct the mixture lasts? Safer to give it a little shake/swirl before use?
