Ever since the recent gas “shortage” the family has been discussing putting in some fuel tanks, one for (non ethanol) gasoline and one for diesel. I figure we could potentially buy fuel in bulk and then fill our vehicles rather than being dependent upon the commercial stations.

Has anyone put fuel tanks on their property? Is there a ”right” way to go about it? What kind of costs? Are there local contractors you might recommend? What’s the permitting like? I have read that govt, entities get squirrely when you go above 25 gallons at a “residential” structure but we have sufficient land we could put in a fueling station or put it as part of our agricultural structures.

I was recently told that heating fuel is just diesel w/red dye because of the lack of transportation taxes.
Thought that was interesting.
Basically. My in-laws had two 500 gallon tanks for their company. One on road and one off road. Apparently with the big trucks you get serious fines for running off road.

Have a 270 gal tank of off-road diesel (#2 fuel oil) for tractor.
Filled it in July of 2020 at 1.99/gal.
I'd like to add an ethanol-free tank about half that size.

Edit to add: bought tank from G&B Energy in 2012 with manual pump, cost about $850.

My thinking is that from the generator threads non ethanol lasts a year or more, especially if stabilized. If we buy in bulk and fill from it to keep it fresh, we’re buying wholesale rather than retail and playing the odds, should have plenty for periods of shortage.

I suspect there are all kinds of hoops to jump through if you want to put in underground tanks. Above ground on stands, I wouldn't think would be an issue. Tons of houses still have fuel oil tanks on stands.

Bendel Corp. on Graham St. in Charlotte manufactures fuel tanks for under or above ground tanks. They also make stainless steel tanks.

I have a 2500 gallon tank at my business. We use 2000 gallons a week so Atlantic Petro gladly comes every Monday and fills it up. Just don’t know how willing they would be with that small of an amount. They let us use the tank for free as long as we use their fuel.

Not sure about private use but any business that installs tanks is I believe required to place them in a containment area capable of holding the tank contents sbould it leak. Don't qoute me on that but I have bjolt two of these at places I worked.

Not if they are double walled tanks. That was one of my questions before I put the tanks in.
