Many understand the disconnect. Many don't. Still more are unaware of exactly what it does and doesn't do.

First, what it isn't.

It's not a safety despite what some will tell us, along with a good many who should know better.

It's not a means or a mechanism to prevent firing out of battery. I've stated this often. You can't pull the trigger on a 1911 pistol and cause it fire far enough out of battery to blow up. It's a mechanical impossibility. If you know someone who's had a kaboom, and insisted that it must have fired out of battery, they either fired a double charged round, or they destroyed case head support whilst doing a killer-diller ramp'n'throat job...or both.

Now, for what it is.

The disconnect is both a connector and a disconnector.

The trigger stirrup never touches the sear. When the disconnect is up in the fire position, it bridges the gap between the trigger and the sear. The trigger bears on the disconnect and rotates the sear out of the hammer hooks and fires the pistol. Then, when the slide moves and pushes it down into the disconnected position, the gap between trigger and sear is reestablished, allowing the sear free movement to reset and grab the hammer hooks, holding the hammer at full cock, ready for the next shot.

So, go forth Browning warriors, armed with knowledge and strike down the infidel myths and misconceptions wherever you find them. Make Mose proud.
