I used to have a S&W Chief's Special but I'm not looking for something small like that. Probably want something like a 4-6" barrel. More for fun than EDC or anything like that. I know it's a REALLY general question - but what would you suggest I look at? Or maybe just share your favorites and what you like about them?

Only really looking at .38/.357 or larger.

4" 357, you can shoot 38 Specials when you want a mild recoiling gun and full house when you need it.
I've gotten (2) 4" S&W model 28's recently.

Ruger LCR in .357 mag. Easy to pocket carry...…….shoots 38's too,

S&W Model 57 chambered in 41Magnum with 4" barrel, Fuzzy Farrant grips and Jack Weigand action... this'd be the one if'n I could only have one revolver.

I like my 586. I would like to have the 686, but I swore of buying guns this year.

Any objection to single actions? I love my 6.5" Blackhawk & it makes me look like a hero at the range.

If yer after a double action, I'd vote for a 4"-6" .357 in your favorite flavor. I really like the heft & balance of a 6" GP-100 & wouldn't turn my nose up at a 6" 586 or 686.

@MacEntyre has me jonezin' for a blued 4" model 57 with a nice set of coke bottle grips.

It is a wide range, depending upon your budget.

In general I recommend the following in 4”. I think the 357 Magnum is optimal in that length. 6” can be front heavy. I do prefer 6” in 44 Magnum and larger calibers, for ballistics.

S&W 686 or 686 Plus
S&W 586
Ruger GP 100 or even Talo version
Taurus Model 66 357 Magnum 7 shot
Colt Python 2020

I have the following in 357 Magnum

S&W Performance Center 627 2.5” 8 Shot 357 Magnum
S&W Performance Center 627 5” 8 Shot 357 Magnum
S&W 586 357 Magnum 6 Round Revolver
S&W Performance Center 586 L-Comp 7 Shot 357 Magnum
Taurus Model 66 357 Magnum 7 shot
Taurus 605 5 Shot 357 Magnum
Taurus 605 5 Shot 357 Magnum, 1994 Custom Shop
S&W 640 357 Magnum 5 Shot

For triggers, in DA, I prefer a S&W or Taurus. I don’t shoot them in SA. I shoot from 22 WMR/Magnum to 500 Magnum in revolvers.

I've really enjoyed my Smith 686-6, the 7 round capacity is really nice, its heavy enough to absorb .357 pretty easily, and .38 special are powder puffs through it. I can, and have carried it OWB before, so its able to be a carry piece, and 7 rounds of .357 is nothing to sneeze at in regards to self defense. Oh, and they are also pretty sweet lookin.

Don't forget Dan Wessons. Great guns and interchangeable barrels. I had a 715 Pistol Pack but have sold it (stainless 357 with 4 different length barrels). Still have my 738, a 5-shot, J-frame size stainless 38 special. Have not shot it for a couple years.

I really enjoy my GP100. I have the 4.2" Match Champion in .357/.38, looking at getting the 10mm too. Solid gun for sure.
Even better with a set of wolff springs. The GP100 and SP101 is the easiest trigger job out there for a revolver. My SP101 had the sweetest DA pull I ever felt on a sub $1000 wheelgun.

And I know wheres theres a brand new 4" Blued GP100 .357 for $500...so tempting

I’d agree. I think I used Wilson springs. Polished up some stuff with mother’s and a dremel and some 1000/2000 grit paper. Awesome results I’ve used it with good results in IDPA.

I installed theWolff springs in my stainless GP100 and it made a big difference. Very easy job. Blued version I just bought will get them also.

It’s like an addition. I couldn’t stop after my first dozen.

To learn how to shoot a revolver properly and for fun, get a Smith Model 10 or 14. It's all you need for the basics and you won't be able to outrun the action for several years. Magnums and heavy revolvers are good, but only after you develop repeatable basic skills. A DA trigger is a fine piece of equipment, learn it well and run it hard.

Im with jeppo. The 66 4" is my favorite by far. I got a used, police trade in with sd police stamped on side of it for 250$ about 16 years ago. it was beat all to hell. Took it to my gunsmith instructor who checked it out and said internals were damn near perfect. It just looked like it had been drug down a concrete street by a string. we tuned it (slightly), and then i polished it up really bright and that thing looked like a million bucks. I ended up selling it for 700$... I still regret it.:(

I do like mine! I picked up a 4" 66 no dash from a member of the old forum a couple o years ago for around $400. It came with a scratch on the left side and an ugly set of Pachmayer grips. To me, it's a beauty and a good shooter. The only other 66 no dash I've seen is located in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, WY. It's a LOT prettier'n mine though.

Same. Mine was beat up with ugly butler creek grips and i loved it all the same. After my instructor tuned it, it was the best trigger ive ever felt and after i polished it, it was mirror bright. I also added a new set of rosewood factory grips.. maaaaan, i miss her!
