Hey All, I just wanted to post my experience with obtaining a CWP/CCW in Guilford County, NC. Perhaps this will be helpful/stressful to anyone still waiting on their permit in this county.

Here was my timeline:
1) On January 30th, 2021 I take my CCW class with my wife and we both get our instructor signed certification of qualification.
2) The same night, we go online and schedule our Sheriff's appointment, the absolute earliest they can get us an appointment is on July 14, 2021 (5-1/2 months away).
3) July 14th comes around both my wife and I go to our appointments and submit the paperwork.
4) November 2nd I call the Sheriff's department to see if I can find out if anything is wrong and they state that they are not able to give me any time frame estimates and that my app is processing.
5) On November 29th I received a text and email stating that the application has been approved. Here is the text "Guilford County Concealed Handgun Permit Order Nbr:xxxxx is APPROVED and will be mailed to you in approximately 3 weeks. Please check your email for details."

I am a recent transplant from AZ and perhaps it's just bad timing on my part, but this whole process has been drawn out to an extent that I couldn't even imagine. One day I hope NC adopts constitutional carry.
I will also note that many of my co-workers and friends outside of Guilford county stated that their processing times were 3-4 weeks max, so it does seem that only Guilford is struggling to keep up with the applications.

TLDR: My wife got pregnant the week we took our CCW class. Our baby was born 5 weeks ago. We still don't have CCW permits in hand. For those of you in this county waiting for your CCW. I wish you all of the best!

Took my wife and I almost a year to get ours. A friend had his fingerprints done over two months before I did mine, his permit came a month after mine. Guilford is dragging ass, I think maybe intentionally.

So if it took 11-12ish months for your approval and it took 10.5 Months for our recent approval, it seems they are really starting to pick up the pace. /s

In an adjoining county, I already have my appointment for the 90th day before my CHP expires.

I’d have called the Sheriff to ask why his department can’t respect the lawful timeline.
I remember the instructor stating that once the application is received, they are required to issue within 90 days (unless I fail to meet the conditions of the app). What gets me is that I couldn't even get an appointment to submit the paperwork for 5-1/2 months. If there aren't any legal ramifications to the Sheriff's department not meeting lawful deadlines, I doubt much will change. I don't have deep pockets and lawyers sure are spendy.

I think it is a combination of being a higher population county and having to process both High Point and Greensboro in conjunction with intentionally delaying and obstructing, or at least ignoring the problem, because he opposes an armed citizenry. Barnes was a royal authoritarian and would delay to the maximum, but stay within the letter of the law. Rogers is very likely just anti - 2A.

A couple of things to note, the state actually does the permit processing and it is mostly coordinated by the sheriff. The papers include the so called "mental health" check and I believe this is in addition to the 90 day processing window; a loop hole if you will, meaning if they don't get these back they can simply sit on your application. I don't believe there is any standardization on what facilities they check.

Shoulda kept on going east a couple minutes & whoa'd up in Alamance instead.
Hahaha! We were looking a places all over while we were staying in a Winston Salem apartment complex. Had I known some of the nuances, it might have swayed my purchase. I couldn't pass on the home or acreage. So the chips landed here and we love the area and people around us.

Says the guy who went MANY minutes west. 😂

True that, tho I did give Alamance 13 years (& Cumberland another 13, before that) before splitting to MAGA country with Constitutional carry, medical MJ & a population density less than half that of NC. 😉

A loophole you say? never figured they would have snuck one of those in there.... /s. Thanks for the additional clarification. As long as we are talking about loopholes, I think the whole CCW permit itself is a loophole to infringing on the 2A rights of Citizenry... just my 2¢.

Absolutely. NC is a great place & sounds like you've found y'all's spot. We loved it there & leaving my NC & CFF peeps was harder than I thought. The purple going on blue politics chafed a bit, but it was fam that ultimately pulled us back home.

The takeaway is to make your appointment long BEFORE you even take the CHP class.
Some counties are now requiring the CertificatE number …
That’s what I was about to ask/mention. I seem to recall I had to provide mine almost 15 years ago when I set my first appt.

It’s not just Guilford. I have several friends that all took a class together in January. First date they could get here in Meck to submit was June (maybe even July?), and they’ve yet to receive theirs. It may end up being a full year from class to permit.

My wife and I renewed ours in late Sept within the 90 days prior to expiration window. At the time we were told that they were taking about 12 weeks. We got our renewals in about four. Granted, we no longer live in Guilford. I will say that Guilford was good about processing the change of address. They directed me where to go on their website, I mailed them the paper work and documentation, I sent it certified return receipt and got the receipt. A few weeks late I got the forms in the mail showing the change had been processed, which I took with us to renew.

All of the Democrat strongholds have Sheriffs that obstruct in every way they can get away with. Ours in Wake has been sued multiple times and recently paid a $30,000 fine. Didn’t help. Dumbass won’t let you make an appointment to renew until 60 days out (law says 90), and then you can’t get an appointment until it’s almost expired. Add the normal processing delay and you are guaranteed to be walking around with an expired permit for a while. Because pointlessly inconveniencing CHP holders will reduce crime, I guess. Meanwhile, they dismiss 52% of felon-with-gun charges. You have to be pretty stupid to be a Democrat these days.

My renewal is coming up in about 100 days. I live in Wake but my name is on a lease in a different county for my son to go to college. I often spend the night there. I called that sheriff and asked if I could apply there, they said just bring the lease and come in anytime. They have a Republican sheriff (which some on here say are no different from Democrats). I beg to differ. Just not having to carry that Wake idiot’s name around in my wallet for five years is reason enough to renew elsewhere. And with four other Democrats and two Republicans running against him in the primary, I shouldn’t have to deal with him five years from now.

@MostWanted
It’s amazing the difference a pro-2A sheriff can make. I spoke with mine a few months ago. At the end, he said, “Thanks for carrying. I consider all of you part of my department”. He personally phones each new CHP recipient to congratulate and thank them.

Of course not. What do they care about a $30,000 file they pay with YOUR tax dollars? How's that for a kick in the pants? Now if it came out of THEIR actual pockets they would NEVER be late.

Don't forget the part about DL address matching the CHP address. I'd stop by the DMV first. That'll take a few weeks since they don't issue from the office anymore unless they'll accept your whatever it is they give you when you change address on your DL in your new county.

Yeah Guilford County sucks. I mailed my renewal application on June 27. My permit expired Sept 15. Finally received new permit at the end of Oct. The only plus is it was done all by mail and I never had to step foot in the Sheriff Dept.

Sorry it's taking so long to get your permits.

The DL thing also goes with auto insurance and where the vehicle is mainly garaged. Then the registration in which county … then tax purposes … computerized databases screw stuff up.

As to applying for a CHP in a new county when you have one issued in another you have to remember that Raleigh and the SBI has a file also … and act approve and print the CHP cards. The new application would likely be flagged and somehow it would be a CF. My permit number is the same as it was once they switched from using your SSN … and it has not changed in 3 changes of county and even one lapse. I don’t think the “end around” of King Baker and his Kingdom of Wake is a smart idea.

Meck is currently processing app from March18-26.

The new sheriff is a leftist POS and he’s about as incompetent as they come, I wouldn’t be surprised if a protocol was in place to drag out the process, everyone in my family got our permits between 70-90 days.

Took me from March of this year (class) until early October to get the fingerprint appointment, then the permit showed up mid November - this being Wake county. Everyone who I worked with in the Sheriff's office during the process was as nice as could be, just a very long time to work through the system.

Well it's good to hear that it's not all of North Carolina with this issue.

At best, the Guilford county sheriff's department is a highly inefficient and or understaffed department incapable of scaling to meet the increasing demand for CHP's.

At worst they are corrupt obstructionists who are doing everything in their power to legally reduce the number of armed lawful citizens.

I suppose a the silver lining to all of this is that there is a very large increase in demand for lawful CHP's in general. This based on conversations I have had with some of the class Instructors.

I didn't have any issues with the people I directly interacted with. They were all cordial. Most are just doing their jobs heads down and working like poorly machined gears in an overly beurocratic machine. :) I have many friends in Law Enforcement, so I can't hate on them. I wouldn't want to do their jobs.

When I renewed about 2 years ago I Lincoln Co. I walked in. Did the paperwork, talked to the girl processing it for about 10 minutes. Had a detective deliver it to my door in about 3 weeks.

Didn't hurt that the detective is a family friend of the gf's and was bringing his mobile sawmill to cut some lumber for us.

Guilford County 😡 Wifey applied for her renewal early July, permit expires late August, she got notified this morning December 3rd that it had been approvEd…and would be mailed within 3 weeks. Merry Christmas,? What the heck, and we are supposed to just be ok with this level of service. You’ve got to be kidding me!
