Posted for general knowledge as it was passed to me. I don't have $65 or I'd be tempted to sit in for the intel gathering at least.

You know it's going to be a fun time.

  • Explore controversial questions about the impact of gun culture in the U.S. during a Dialogues Seminar through Carolina Public Humanities. The 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 15 discussion will include topics on race and guns in 19th-century North Carolina and debates about the 2nd Amendment in 21st-century America. Registration closes on Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. Tuition is $65 to attend in person and $50 virtually.

I wouldn't mind listening in on the virtual part of the meeting, just to see what they're saying about us, but I'll admit I don't want to pay $50.00 just to hear someone trash talk my people.

Anyone placing odds on whether the Jim Crow origins of the PPP scheme will be discussed?

I signed up. Not sure if I'll actually participate, but I signed up. If it's free I might do it and see what they're saying. I'll report back if so

Record it & post it for our entertain I mean enlightenment!

I recieved information from them, I will get a link in the morning to the online seminar.
Again, I cant say if I will actually do it or not
BUT
The email stated the whole thing will be posted on youtube about a week later...which, while great theyre going to post it, why is it going to take a week?!

I'll update.

"Why have guns become so important to our society, especially compared to other, modern, nations"
How do guns enter into many layers into our lives?" "How do guns affect people of different genders, races, and sexualities?"

Classify & divide, classify & divide, classify & divide. I honestly can't believe they're still running with this crap, it seems like everyone is wise to it by now. Maybe it still works but I believe the facade is failing.

I listened to all of the first session, and just joined into the 2nd.

Honestly, it hasnt been, to my knowledge, about division, but more anecdotal about the history of blacks owning guns in America.
I just tuned in and they were discussing the high rate of death of blacks by guns than others, but Ive not heard anything, yet, about who is COMMITTING the murders.

The whole first session was full of historical stories and I found it quite amusing and interesting, about how slaves and free blacks in the antebellum period had or didnt have access to lawfully acquired weapons.

Right now theyre discussing crime rates, specifically homicides.

"The majority of gun deaths every year is death by suicide not by homicide" just stated.

Different speaker currently, first guy/first session was a historian and author and, again, was good. This one is more, it seems, statistical and I may not last this whole period.

Also, first session there was q/a session and a guy from Columbia asked about gun regulations vs crime rates and stated that through gun legislation Columbia has become much safer...Id be interested in seeing stats of this. That same guest also used the phrase 'assualt weapons'

One thought that I have, and maybe yall will view this differently when/if you view this presentation on your own, is that so far it has NOT been biased against gun rights, not been biased against gun owners. Hasnt seemed/been political. I know many see "UNC and Duke" and get a sour taste in their mouth, but Im not there yet with this one.
But, there's still time to go....

This guy in 2nd session Im feeling a bit more of the bias. He's saying some 'good' stuff, but also highlighting some about how a gun owner can/has been 'bad'
Ie: almost all gun owners are law abiding...some gun owners think they are stopping crimes but nothing has happened yet, "Guy walked up to us up to no good, flashed my gun, he ran away"..."well, maybe that guy wasnt up to no good, maybe they just wanted the time, you just assaulted someone" (Im trying my best to quote here, sorry)

Now he's speaking on background checks.
"Federally licensed dealers, and ONLY federally licensed dealers, are required to do a background check"
"Does this work? 70.7% of those refused are felons, 16(?)% are people with assault history"
He said that the background checks work mostly, but only applying to federal dealers

He's now stating some questioning if a dealer does or does not then sell to a person after failing the check

Speaking on stats.
First it was 'do you support gun control' and looks at 80% of Repubs vs 17(?)% of Dems
But then looks at breaking down the questions more detailed like, "supporting gun control for mentally ill" and speaking on the overlap of parties and gun owners vs non-gun owners. Which, of course, makes sense.
Im sure when asked a vague question many on here would say "no gun control" but maybe have a different opinion when asked a question like posed above. Maybe.

He's talking about Sandy Hook now and the 2A, mass shootings etc How things are/have changed since SH and Manchin Tumey (?) Amendment for gun control

Focus on the 2A NOT being the militia but that we need/have it to protect ourselves as individuals.

Lots on Heller case at moment going with what I just posted about the 2A

I ended before the end of the QA session, my question wasnt being asked (he had made a remark about the first gun control act in 1934 (?) and stated that automatic weapons dropped in the events of crimes - I asked if that stat was regarding the 30s/40s or pertaining to now.

He stated how automatic was still legal, but very expensive

He kept referring to AR15 as assault weapon...but did also state that they were just like a hunting rifle with a few 'scary' looking parts added (his word) like barrel shroud

Def some folks in the crowd/in attendance who were anti-gun. One guy, who sounded country as heck, talked about some camping retreat they go to and how there's a gun range close by. They went recently and heard HOURS of gun fire and how they felt so scared. Ridiculous. Then, of course, the Columbian guy who kept going on about AR15.

But they spent a lot of time on gun laws, proposed things in the past etc

Oh, and the second guy made the comment that 'assault weapons' make up about 1% of gun crimes in America, most are pistols

I would have to have been smoking crack to listen to all that pseudo intellectual drivel. Probably run by some grad student that thinks deep thoughts.

No
One was a professor from...somewhere, who is new to UNC. That was the first guy, the author.
Second guy is a lawyer

Oh, I pretty much nailed. Professor. ‘Nuff said. The insanity that has cone from our University Systems is enough to justify going all BLM on their campuses. They need to go as they are currently constituted. The long march through the institutions has been a complete success. Time to take away their battle field.

Yeah, pretty much. But there's still quite a difference between a grad student and a tenured and published doctor (of history, Im assuming ha)

I dont know if I'll remember this in a week, but give it a listen when it's on youtube. I listened as I walked around, drank coffee, shopped, messed in garage. Mowed. As I said, first guy was not pushing any agenda/politics, just stating information/stories about gun culture in our state, more specifically about blacks owning firearms throughout American history

As I stated, let us not dismiss something because a college sponsored it, but at least hear what is being said before having an opinion on it.

No there really isn’t. Most of these life long University egg heads are idiots. Just read what they write or listen to them speak. They live in a bubble and are responsible for virtually every destructive idea in society. And it was planned. Just read the history of the Frankfurt School and the Long March Through the Institutions. Although I think the modern communists have even gone wackier than their ancestors.

Which is why they want pistols with detachable magazines classified as AWs.

is there an update or after-action report?
Ive not received any information from them
I actually emailed them a few times - I was able to get 4 hours worth of credit towards my license with this.
But my last email was asking for the name of the author, I really am interested in hearing about gun culture in America

One thing that I dont think I mentioned is something that resonates even today, I think.
He told a story of a slave in a part of NC where it was illegal for a black man to own a gun. Well, the slave owner allowed his slaves to keep firearms because that was a way that they could feed themselves. These were mostly smaller plantations with not too many slaves, it seemed that this one was probably around a dozen total.

Anyway, and Im backing up a bit, but the story comes from the slave's son (yes, a slave at that point) in an interview taken during the Great Depression. The WPA, a New Deal org, was tasked with interviewing previous slaves.
Anyway, the son spoke about the pride the father had in being able to
a) hunt well
b) provide for his family and others.
This author spoke about how the gun wasnt used for violence against another man, but it was a way for an enslaved man to feel more like a man, to have that pride of taking care of his family

I enjoyed the story
