had to buy EGGS at the store like a commoner

Memorize this phrase. I use it often with my wife….

“I’ll put you on tha street”.

Tends to get them back in line.

Went up the wet ladder and slipped and caught myself from falling by grabbing the edge of the tin; cut my hand pretty bad.

Not all that bad, long, but not deep. Still, old metal out in the air for several years. The kind of thing you need to be concerned about post SHTF

As a buyer of eggs who is considering chickens at my house, what is the flavor difference between store bought and fresh?

I've never had a fresh egg.
A farm raised egg won't be as runny. When you crack one open & put it in a pan the yolk stands up in a dome rather than flattening out. Slightly richer taste.

A friend has been using hog feed with great success from Collins Feed Mill near Maxton. I switched my chickens over to it and first egg production increased and second they do not waste but very little. $13 for a 50lb bag beats everything I have tried.

Do you supplement their calcium or does the hog feed meet that requirement as well?

I dig marl from the banks along the Cape Fear and spread in the pen for calcium. The guy that raise chicks and eggs for sale only feeds the hog feed with no problems. Found out today that the mill in St. Pauls has chicken feed for $14 per 50lb.

I've gone to a Pig and Sow feed and a Chicken Mash combo from the feed mill in Richlands. Egg production has risen, but I'm not sure it's the feed or the time of the year.

My girls' production has been up and down, even after switching feed. At this point for me, it's going to be about cost.
@COTTON what's the name of the mill in St Paul's?

Ours started producing better after we introduced dry kitten kibble into their feed. My parents chickens did too, before the damned raccoons got ‘em. My three are laying, but the older one is slacking off a little bit. We have seven pullets at my parents house now, and just yesterday we received nine chicks when we ordered eight. I think the stuck a free pecker in the order.

J-HAM FARM in St Pauls and Collins Milling in Red Springs. I deal with Collins on hog feed and a friend uses the mill in St Pauls.
