I have recently started making my own cutting boards, some with and some without laser engraving. I have been getting most of the lumber from The Hardwood Store of NC in Gibsonville. great place but does anyone have any other suppliers in the area?

Here are a few pics of a couple that I have made so far.

Nice work! I used to buy from Steve Wall Lumber in Madison when I lived in Germanton.

I just found his site tonight, looks like he has great reviews. I may drive up there tomorrow.
Take your pocket book. I don't say that because they are pricey, I say that because their warehouse will make you spend money you didn't plan to spend. I used to make cutting boards and huge butcher blocks as a side business before wood working became my career. I went in there one day to spend about $400 for some hard maple and walnut, I spent ten times that amount and had to bring a trailer back later that afternoon. Check out their racks of shorts, those normally can be had for a decent price.

This guy is in Clemmons . NC. May be worth a call.

Klingspor's in Winston has what you're looking for as well. At least the last time I was in there about a year ago.

+1 for Richard. A great guy to deal with.

From a larger quantity perspective, here are some of the top stores in NC.

1 - The Hardwood Store in Gibsonville
2 - Wall Lumber in Mayodan
3 - World Timber in Hubert. They specialize in importing exotic lumber from around the worlds and their pricing is excellent. They are not a "retail" establishment like the Hardwood Store; typically you need to be buying a few hundred board feet of the same species at a time, but their rates are great.
4 - The Moulding Source in Mooresville
5 - West Penn Hardwoods in Connover, PA. Great selection and pricing.

Secondary locations would included Klingspor's Woodworking shops in Hickory and Cary.

There are lots of milling and drying operations like mine that also sell lumber, but we are not going to have much in the way of exotics - just lumber from locally sourced logs. Your number one concern when buying from a smaller outfit is that the lumber is properly dried - and more importantly - sterilized.

There are also large wholesalers around the state, but they usually only sell in truckload quantities, which is around 12,000 board feet - give or take (and that's a lot of cutting boards!)

Hope this helps.

Mahogany dust can cause pneumonia. Doctor told us that is what caused my younger son to get pneumonia years ago after he was making letter openers out of mahogany.

Thanks everyone, I ended up hitting up both Walls and The Hardwood store today. I have gotten some from Klingspor's in the past as well.

I am keeping it safe. Only woods that are commonly used in cutting boards and I am also using only food grade mineral oil and a mix of mineral oil and bees was for the finish.
