Have you tried an LPVO and did you like it or regret it?

One that hasn’t been mentioned:
The USO TS8X 1-8x….it’s decent in terms of glass but I absolutely hated the reticle. The stadia lines were very bulky and the illum needed about 5 more settings brighter

Currently $449 at EuroOptic for the FFP, which isn’t terrible….$399 would be even better for what you get. If it was full price ($795) I’d say no way. The SFP model, which is the one I had, is $561 on sale (strange, since I think FFP is sort of lost in a 1x anything). I’d definitely want second focal plane version of this optic

The Steiner PX4i was fantastic when it was sub-$500. The price tag now makes me really confused, but I’d take the Steiner 1-4 at $795 over the USO 1-8x for the same price all day

Just picked up a strike eagle and put on my AR and tried to sight it in this weekend in all the wind, and man the weight difference over the red dot and 3x magnifier seemed significant. After about 40 rounds it just felt heavy

What red dot and mag were you using and which strike eagle did replace it with? Can’t imagine it would be TOO much heavier. Is your mount heavy?

From what I recall, the mount that comes with the Strike Eagle is pretty heavy.

Holosun 403 with the holosun 3x magnifier on flip mount. Yeh its a vortex branded mount so assuming it's the one it came with. Maybe it's just been a while since I've shot it but just seems heavier

Ill chime in LPVO are great , but you have to get some decent. Quality glass isn’t cheap. Reticle is the next big deal , in order to have one that lights up - some have really “fat” lines that obscure finer points of a target at longer ranges. Also some reticle are way too busy , all of those extra lines and BS definitely obscure things at longer ranges.
Decide what you want to do , and try to be realistic on the magnification you “need” I own a 1-4x and a 1-8x - I use the 1-4 the most. On a 5.56mm rifle the chances I will be shooting past 300 are very slim , your needs may be different. If possible shoot some matches with whatever you have now , and try out other peoples (even looking through them) or most guys will let you run a stage with their stuff. Higher magnifications = less forgiving eye boxes with lower to mid priced scopes. The very best optics I have personally shot with are Higher end Vortex Razors , Trijicons and my personal favorite Nightforce NX8 — I am holding out to buy a NX8 someday
I haven’t owned or shot a flip magnifier/ red dot combo that worked really well in my opinion- they work but at Longer ranges not as well - something about looking through 4 lenses -the image quality is never great compared to a nice LPVO (my opinion )
If you are anywhere in the Eastern side - PM me , Ill gladly let you try anything I own and guys at our club will do the same

Yes, sold it and regret it. I want to get rid of the EOTech and get another LVPO (astigmatism; otherwise, the EOTech is a great little piece of gear). If anyone wants to trade let me know.

"Cheap" is relative, and depends on mission. $350-$450 can get you some good glass, if that is what you need. Of course it can go well over $2K as well.

I saw that one of the site sponsors has Athlon LPVOs for a decent price. I admittedly know nothing about optics so it looks like a decent deal. Is it a good budget option, or should I just keep saving for something fancier? The need isn't pressing, but with prices going uo everywhere it seems like a good idea to go ahead and buy.

I can't speak to the specific optics you're asking about, but I have an Athlon Chronus spotting scope from the same vendor and it's great glass for the price. I have no problems with the quality of the brand.

I have owned the Steiner 1-4, and currently own the Gen 2 Viper PST 1-6 and an HD Razor 1-6 (non E model). I prefer a red dot for my gun that lives in my home, and an lpvo for everything else.

Not sure if you've made a purchase yet but here is my two cents- The Steiner was great glass, had an uncluttered reticle, and was lightweight. The Viper has awesome glass, an uncluttered reticle and is heavier than the Steiner. If weight savings takes priority over the magnification then get the Steiner. I chose the two Vortex scopes for the extra magnification.
