Hello from Massachusetts - Hopefully not much longer!

Hey everyone,

I currently reside in Natick, MA  but my family is considering making the move to NC :).

My wife and I are from Ohio originally and we moved to MA for college, and ended up staying there. Tons of obvious nonsense has always bothered me about MA, and I think we're finally making the move. Her parents retired to Wilmington, NC, we both have remote jobs, so nothing is really tying us to MA now.

We're looking forward to the lower cost of living, less nanny-state culture, and being closer to our family. As I said, still live in MA, but in early December we're taking a few days to meet with a realtor and barring my wife absolutely hating NC, I think we'll be moving to the Raleigh-Durham area.

Right now, we're thinking Cary (yes, I know the acronym), Apex, Holly Springs, or Wake Forest. Looking forward to meeting you all!

As far as firearms go, my current plan is to sell everything I have up here and buy new in NC. I feel strongly about keeping all of my pre-ban (94 and 2016) stuff in MA. I've built a couple of ARs, I have a low serial number Tavor that I baby, a Glock Gen4 (that I paid way too much for), my wonder Ruger 1911, and an over under shotgun I use for skeet and trap.

I really enjoy shooting sports, getting into USPSA and IDPA would be great after the move. I also am looking for range recommendations that would allow run and gun type drills - those are super hard to find in MA and I belong to one of the few, but it's always busy due to supply/demand issues.

Anyway, thanks and looking forward to joining you all in the Carolinas.

Glad to hear you're making an escape, unfortunately I'm trapped in the 413 for two more years. My wife used to work in Natick way back, she was an assistant buyer at BJ's. Went to a few cruise nights over at Nick's back in the day. Recently picked up a living room set over at Jordan's Furniture. For all the cool stuff unfortunately the moonbats have fouled up the state beyond repair.

Mrs. TheRoad and I have family outside of Charleston and have been scoping out a place to land a ways west of there. It'll be nice to spend my retirement time and funds in a state where folks appreciate and respect how this nation was founded.

My wife is a little concerned about moving anywhere in the south that likes the confederate flag a little TOO much, and I know she won't have that problem in the triangle. I think it's a holdover from living in Ohio and MA - if someone flies the confederate flag in either of those northern states, let's just say they're usually not proud of their southern heritage... Hope that doesn't get me in trouble here.
Slavery is evil. I do appreciate the South, don't fly/bumper sticker a rebel flag, and don't have space in my life for haters.

Be advised, we're striving for a zero nanny state culture, not just "less".

Not possible.

I hear Maryland is nice. Perhaps baby steps would be best?

Welcome to the forum.

You and your misses will be welcomed warmly.

People help people here. Just last week a kind young changed a flat tire for my mom who is 74.

This.

I live in Asheville, not the most conservative city roundabout... Nevertheless, my fuel pump died last Friday after 5pm in the Northern Tools (oh, the irony) parking lot, and a total stranger helped out... before my neighbor could get there... who arranged to have his friend take care of my truck over the weekend... and which neighbor loaned me his truck for 2 days while rain & snow delayed an outdoor repair job.

That never happened to me when I lived on the Cape. It's good to be home.

Irony alert: just got an email fron a recruiter for a job in Woburn MA. Told him I'd have to live in NH because I had a cabinet full of stuff that is illegal in MA. [emoji6][emoji6][emoji28][emoji28]

You could smoke it all before the move. :D

This is a company that offered me a job back in 2005. I interviewed at their Cedar Rapids office over the summer.
I've reached the point where is almost be willing to move to the cold again to stop the China travel. Just not to MA. Have to be a home or apartment in NH. Maybe an apartment so I have more time for fishing for striped bass. And more time to get my wife into competition shooting.

The entire AWB and gun laws in MA are predicated on the fact that eventually all the scary guns will leave the state or need to be replaced. I don't know if I could ever do it justice if I tried to explain just how messed up the laws are up here. But, we still have the '94 AWB, so all of my AR mags over 10 rounds have to be from before then. Which means they need to be taken care of and refinished every so often.

My Glock Gen4 cannot be bought new from a dealer. In MA you can only buy Gen2 Glocks from dealers and they go for $600+. If you want something newer than that, you need to find a dealer willing to 4473 the frame to you, and then mail you slide and mags separately, they'll charge $750+. This is all because the Attorney General in MA maintains a secret list of guns that dealers can't transfer to non-LEO without risking her office suing them for violating consumer protection regulations. Now, this list isn't public, and dealers never know what's actually on it, but they all know that Glocks, and until very recently the Springfield XDs, are on it.

Also, until July of last year, you could buy AWB compliant ARs - just had to have 2 or less features, including pistol grip and detachable mag. So welded on muzzle brakes and preban or 10rd mags, no bayonet lugs or collapsible stocks and you were okay. In July of last year, the AG sent a letter to every FFL in the state saying that even the "compliant" ones are actually illegal and they cannot sell them in the state. Nor can they transfer them to non-LEO. That means that my previously compliant rifles are actually a felony possession charge, but she's "allowing" us to keep them this time.

I'm going to keep my guns in MA and sell them to my friends for as cheap as I can reasonably replace them in NC. So I'll sell my Glock to a friend for $500 or $600, take the loss on principle. That kind of thing.

All true. Good on you for getting out. I am jealous. And for those that don't know, it isn't just about the laws which are plenty bad enough but it's also about the refs that the AG and exec branch make up as they go putting gun owners in legal jeopardy without anyone even knowing.

And to top it off some commie wrote an op ed in the Globe the other day demanding confiscation of all semiautos. The attacks on our rights here are incessant and unending.

You also have a marsupial court system that operates as if 2A does NOT apply to the individual despite what the MA Constitution, US Constitution and SCOTUS say. It's unbelievable here and you really have to live it to truly understand how messed up it is. Best example is that it is a felony to have a spent shell casing without a license to carry (LTC) or an FID card!

Best of luck to the OP. Wish you nothing but the best!

Alright, got the final approval from the wife - we're moving soon! Came down and looked at houses and neighborhoods last weekend. Have a realtor both in MA and NC, and expect to move in Q1.

We found awesome stuff that we're really excited about in Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs. Anyone recommend any ranges not too far from there? Also, I assume I need to take the conceal carry class.

Really excited about this!

Welcome!

For North Carolina, those towns are pretty expensive. For Massachusetts maybe not so much. They are very popular with immigrants from other states and transplants, also fairly transient because of the local universities. So not really representative of the South.

The best range in the area, one of the best in the state, is Woody's Hunting and Rifle Club http://whr.club/. You will be very close. Not cheap, but the facilities are first-rate. Aside from Woody's there are a handful of indoor ranges with indoor range rules.

You'll be a lot closer to OBX for get aways.
Sell all of your MA compliant trigger and magazine stuff before you move. That way you can by all new or good used stuff with standard triggers and mags. :D

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to NC!
And be for-warned, a tiny bit of snow can cause BIG problems here.

Welcome. I got a few (very few) friends from up that way. My friend from Gardner got a kick out of me showing him the rollstamp on my H&R revolver and shotguns. He knows nothing about firearms, or about the H&R company. I think I'm gonna give him a copy of the Jim Supica book.

Yup. Doesn't happen enough to put a decent set of ice and snow tires on. Most of the winter is too warm for those excellent soft compound tires.
My Rubicon with 37x12.5" TRXUS MT handled the NC crap very well.

Yeah I've already told my friends and giving them first dibs. Since the latest proclamation from the AG 7/20/2016 - completed lowers that were 4473d before that date are going for $800+ on the market. I'm selling everything to my friends for whatever I've got into it.
