I know this is kind of a loaded question but wanted to see what yall thought.. Background, I'm looking for a bolt action rifle for hunting season (deer). Longest shot that I will have is at most 75 yards. Another thing is, I have a dead air sandman S that I want to use, so that means 30 cal. So I guess at that distance would you choose, 308, 30-06, or 300 win mag (possibly a 300 wsm)? . Let me know what yall think

75 yds max, 30 cal can......Ruger American/Savage Axis II in 300BO. Light, nimble, short overall length and plenty powerful for whitetail.

Not against .308 at all, this scenario just seems ideal for the BO.

We have some long shots down this way, even some long shots with low branches and thick tanglefoot, but what we have more of than we need is OVERGUNNED hunters.
Usual long shots here are 75 to 160 or 170 yards, and the last two are BIG maybes.
I'd love to find, or build a 7mm Mauser for down my way, but 6.5×55, 308, '06, 30-30, won't do you wrong as long as you do your part.

If you're only shooting 75 yds and must have a 30 prolly go much smaller. 30 carbine or the overrated fat case 30 carbine (300 black out)

I'd just sell the deadair and get a .223 and lotsa ammo.

Heck, good .22 lr will head shoot everything that range.

thats what I've been hunting with (7.5 inch barrel AR) and it does the trick. I guess I could get the same in a bolt action and not have to get a different type of ammo. I was gonna use the ar for 2 legged creatures for the house

I won't get rid of that stupid can unless I get a ton of money for it LOL I waited for over 400 days for it and I'm gonna use it😁🤣🤣

First, just because it’s a .30 cal can doesn’t mean you must shoot a .30 cal round. Only that you can’t shoot larger than a .30 cal. Two great choices outside the 30-06, .308, or .300 black out is the 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel.

ahhh ok cool, i just thought those would be the better round. I've got some lowers I could build a grendel rifle with

I’ve got a Grendel with a 12” barrel and is a great compact rifle that does well suppressed.

I have a 18in Grendel that suppresses pretty well with my .30cal can

Bolt action....75 yards
308 ...you have a large range of bullet weights even more if you reload
30.06.. range of bullet weight some may be heavier than 308
300 WM ..to me that would be over kill at those ranges, longer distances most definitely

other option in 30 cal...
300 Blackout for that range....

that's staying within your requirements

now I've used the TC Contender in 30 Herrett for hunting and the 357 Herrett, due many
to the trees, bushes, over growth, etc.

Also if you can find one an ole Rem 600, 660 in 308 are a nice hunting combo, short
easy to move around with. Got an ole Redfield 3x9 on one of them.

Anyway was mainly a handgun hunter, just because of the areas, 30 Herrett, 357 Herrett,
375 JDJ, and the occasional Ruger Blackhawk 44 Mag, 45 Colt

Want a Swede bad... have brass, bullets, dies.........but no rifle yet

If you don't reload......308, 30_06, 270 win, or 6.5 creed. Anything more powerful than 30_06 is overkill in the Carolinas at short ranges.

If you do reload.......choose as you wish. 6.5 cartridges tend to have milder recoil if it matters to you. 7mm magnum or 30_06 will have similar recoil.

And I forgot, 300 blackout with the 110 or 125 grain supersonic ammo will work just fine at short ranges. That cartridge works well with a lighter weight, shorter barrel rifle.

308win. Plentiful ammo. 18inch or better a 20inch barrel. Savage made one with a higher twist barrel from the factory to shoot subs well, don’t know about the ruger.
