So I just ordered a Tikka T3X TAC A1 .308 and it will sport a Vortex Viper PST GenII 5-25x50 scope. I need a decent quality, probably 20MOA for long range, mount for it. I'd prefer a QD mount if they are really repeatable on that level. Price range around $200? Does that all jive? I'm not well versed in this area...

What's out there?

I put the seekins one piece on my Tac a1. I got it from euro optic for $199 I’ll post a link here in a few

Very nice! I just used some heavy duty rings on mine so I'm not much help.

Why do you NEED QD?

I would strongly suggest a good quality 1 piece mount and....a Borka or Fix-It-Stick torque driver set. If you set the base in the same slots with the same torque every time you'll be miles (ok, inches on paper) ahead of the game vs. anybody's top-tier QD mount.

Why? Need? Why not? I don't NEED the rifle at all... If I can break it down and fold it up I want the option. That's assuming they are repeatable. Nobody seems to want to say. If it's not possible QD doesn't make as much sense.

My Tac A1 sports a Spuhr 6MIL base. I've removed it 3-4 times to use the scope on another rifle for load testing. It always returns to zero when I torque it with a set of Fix-It-Sticks.

My point, poorly made, is that if the purpose of QD is to be able to easily break things down and make it compact (transport, storage, etc.), then a base plus torque set is a better option for repeatability.

In my mind, QD is meant for "oh crap, Ivan just shot up my optic, I need to switch to BUIS!" whereas on a precision rifle you likely have the 2-3 minutes it would take to use a torque driver to reset.

If it's a quality QD mount, shouldn't it be the same? I'm not set against a fixed base. I'm just looking into QD as an always preferred option to me. Having never done "precision" per se, I don't know if it is viable or not. Hence my asking folks...

Same question asked recently on the 'hide:
https://www.snipershide.com/shooting/threads/qd-mount-or-standard.6986204/#post-8298121

Some good info that could help make the argument either way.

Basically a bunch of poo-poo'ers adding nothing to the conversation and a couple of people with valid input going both ways... I'd be interested in how the guy's test theory worked out with the 10rd strings and remounting between...

That thread does bring up a good point. Multiple optics... I have NV and I'm keen on getting FLIR at some point. I'd like to be able to hot-swap with the long range scope as one of the benefits of a QD base.

Again I don't know how accurate they are for repeatability, but I would like to know to make the call and nobody wants to answer the question. It's either "you're stupid, it won't work, isn't worth it" or " I have this... never tested it"...

I've got two separate setups that utilize LaRue QD scope mounts, they both return to zero. They both set me back a little bit of coin too, but they work exactly as they should.

Generally I am not a big fan of QD mounts unless I might use more than one optic on a rifle, like a RDS and a LVPO on a 'recce'-style AR. On a dedicated gun, I like Badger Ordnance and Nightforce. The QD mounts I do use are LaRue.

Ever look at the geissele mounts? They aren’t exactly qd but I’ve used my leatherman to tighten it to the rail while away from my “bench” and it returns to zero pretty well.

I can’t honestly say it’s perfect rtz because I’ve used them on ars that weren’t intended to be sub moa guns but for what I needed they worked great. They’re a little more than the price you mentioned new but you can pick them up used for $200/$250.

Edited to add:
Bill geissele claims you can hand tighten the mount to your rail and have perfect rtz. I didn’t try it but supposedly. Ymmv.

Spuhr is the way to go if you're genuinely concerned with repeatability. I own three now.

As I mentioned before, I want to be able to swap to NV and in the future, FLIR if/when I get my hands on one...

Thinking about these Larue QD mounts. Hard to tell what the difference is between them...

Hell, I may let one of my Spuhr bases go if I can ever get my hands on a FDE one for my new build.
