The pop-up drain thing was busted. Replaced with new assembly (Home Depot China crap is all they had).

How do I stop this dribble down the threads? I'm ready to break out the silicone and make it the next guy's problem, and that's how I function normally. Screenshot_20210616-114041_Gallery.jpg

Plumber's Putty between the flange inside the sink bowl and the sink bowl. Make a small bead line (like an o-ring) and tighten the flange down. Then trim away any excess that squished out.
Did this.

Take it out. Put plumbers putty under the flange on too of the sink. Tighten down the rubber gasket next to the nut under the sink. Use teflon dope on the threads of the stem. Thatā€™s a seal.
Fresh plumbers putty was/is under the flange. I backed off the nut holding up the rubber seal, wrapped it 10 times with teflon tape, then tightened it up again...possibly tighter than it was previously. Initial test says it's dry now. Letting it sit a bit to see if any water works it way out of there. If that doesn't work I'll hit it with pipe dope.

Thanks everybody.

Upon re-assembly I think you were on to something.
Did you overtighten it this time? You have been warned not to do that.
also, no joint compound...

isn't it great how we've gone from using solid stuff that holds up for decades to chromed plastic that warps if you look at it wrong?

I started bitchin about the chromed plastic being the only thing available at HD before I took it off the shelf. I got it home and my wife peeked in the bag and said, "looks like you're in for a fun morning, F'in plastic Chineesium grumble grumble grumble...sucks to be you." Even the women know this is BS.

Since all the serious replies seem to be in, I just wanted to say that, to those of us who are prostate cancer survivors, the thread title ...

HELP WITH LEAK

... means something very different.

:: now awaits ribald suggestions about where to put teflon tape and plumber's putty!:: :p

I suppose there's folks in the Clinton circle who might respond to "help with leak" by opening their black book for Arkancide
