Henrys

I gave the top one to my brother many months ago. I liked it so much that I had to get another. It was somewhat impossible to find all of the features I wanted, and this one had, but I did - found it BNIB at the Asheville show a few months ago.

Both are .357 mag, 16" octagonal barrel, case-hardened, deluxe wood, side gate. The only difference is the size of the lever loop.

I am curious... does anyone have any of the golden boys they actually used/abused to get some patina on it? I have seen some of the original 1860s Henrys and I always thought that muted brass look had an air of class to it.

After being disappointed by a Marlin 1897 (this is when Marlin was declining - very hopeful that Ruger brings back the Marlin glory) I got a Henry Golden Boy and it did not disappoint.

to get some patina on it
I think that the brass comes with some type of poly coating - it would take a lot of time for that to wear off. But I'm with you on the patina of the original Henrys.

Great question. Brasso is an abrasive polish, so it might remove a coating. But if it doesn't eat through the poly, then you're adding a layer on top of the original finish. I have to admit that I'm not an expert here. I searched around the internet and, over time, there are reports of tarnish on Henry brass receiver covers. So the factory coating might be engineered to last through shipping and store presentation.

Here is the reply that I got from Henry when I emailed them:

to me

"Hi Eric,

Thank you for owning a Henry rifle.

The Golden Boy rifles (H004-series) have a Brasslite finish on the receiver covers and later-production barrel bands. There are not actually brass metal.

Brasslite is a proprietary alloy finish which is easier to maintain than plain, polished brass. We chose this material to keep the rifles lightweight, balanced and to maintain the shine. There are no known ways to create a "patina" on this type of finish.

Thank you for letting me help you today
