Hightune’s LC Smith 16ga featherweight project

Stock acetone soak complete. Clamped up now to deal with various cracks in the head. After the acetone treatment to get some of the old oil of of the head, I coat the entire inletting with a superglue that has the viscosity of water. This penetrated the tiny cracks, and seals the inletting to prevent oil from soaking into the head.
Once this is done, the action will be bedded to the stock with Acraglass Gel which will address gaps and chips in the wood.
Then final sanding will occur, filling the grain, fitting a new pad and grip cap, finish, and sending it out for checkering.

Hightune’s gun is finally finished. Kicked my ever loving arse. What was done: color case, anneal, color case, anneal, color case, clear coat, blue barrels and bits, refinish stock, rechecker stock, swear, pray.

Damn that looks Great.

Bill that looks amazing. Great work!

Wow!!! She’s beautiful!

Absolutely amazing. Like many of us, I love those old doubles. The plastic and paint crowd are missing the point. Hunting without a good dog and a wood/steel gun is just not the same. Thank you for keeping this tradition/art alive. please keep sharing these process photos as you take on other projects.

Thank you. I appreciate the encouragement. It's been difficult lately keeping this new business going. May need to find some other work to supplement. Hearing from folks that it matters to them, helps.

Fantastic. Can you color case harden revolver frames? Those colors would look great on a Colt restoration or a custom build.

Bill is as humble and nice of a guy that you can meet. He has a wealth of knowledge and a craft that is hard to find. If you have an old double laying around that you want to breath new life into…. He is the guy!

I have always considered the 16 gauge to be the perfect size for a side by side shotgun.
That's always been my feeling, too. "The gentleman's gauge" is about as perfect for upland hunting as it gets. The only issue I've had with 16 gauge SXS doubles is that all I've seen have all been a little long-barrelled for my tastes. I much prefer 26 inches.

You can color frames. Always risk or distortion when dumping 1400 degree metal in ice water, but braces are made to try and prevent it. Happy to try it if you’ve got something unimportant to test with.
