I find myself always searching for something for HD that isnt a shotgun or an AR... I dont care for 223 ar's or shotguns..

BUT, I want something effective besides a handgun that can possibly serve more roles, besides sitting in the closet waiting on a BG, like a shotgun will do.

Any suggestions? Im wanting to build a 6.5 grendel pistol... Thinking of just having that as my "HD" gun, that can also shoot longer range, and hunt.

What say you guys?

9mm SBR, suppressed, is my nightstand gun. AND...it's an u deniably hoot to bang steel with at the range. It's without question the most "fun" gun I have and the one that new shooters always get the biggest grin out of.

4.5" barrel, 6" suppressor, PDW style stock, compact and perfect for the HD role.

That has been on my mind as well

For HD that’s about perfect or do it as a pistol even. Since you aren’t interested in an AR I won’t suggest a CMMG Banshee in 9mm with a 5” barrel and say check into the CZ Scorpion in 9mm.

Honestly I think in your OP you’re asking for something to do toooo much and be a great HD choice ... just stick with what’s best for HD and range fun but skip the hunting and LR since those two usually take a round with more “umph” than a lower recoil, light, quick handling PDW type usually runs.

30-30 carbine sounds like an option. Maybe a 16” barrel with a red dot. Pretty good stopping power for 2 and 4 legged creatures. Probably 6-7 rounds plus a butt cuff with 4-5 more. Or you could go with 357 or 44 mag lever for more capacity but less hunting capabilities. Might just depend on how much you hunt.

Rifle cartridges with short barrels are usually insanely LOUD...…. I tried to talk a buddy of mine out of a 223 with a short barrel (either 7.5 - 10.5 inch?), but at any rate he sold it shortly (also had a brake on it). I couldn't imagine shooting something that loud indoors...….

44 Mag Lever or Bolt gun ??? Might cover the ground you are looking for. IIRC the Ruger 77/44 has a short bolt throw (fast, maybe not having to remove cheek weld?) but the lever rifle might be a little faster?

The 30/30 mentioned above might fill the need, and they are more affordable than the 44 mag rifles.

I don't trust most Handgun Cartridges for hunting..... with the exception of the magnum rounds.

CZ Scorpion SBR or with a brace. 35 round PSA or Magpul mags. 147 grain with a can. Pew pew translates roughly to "die die".

I like that lol

And I fourth the supressed 9mm SBR and third the Scorpion suggestion in particular. My supressed Scorpion SBR lives in between the nightstand and the wall.
Got a shotty under the dresser in case of catastrophic failure.

I forgot ... if you’re feeling old school and don’t mind a little rarer round ... M1 Carbine! Hornady even has a nice HD round for .30carbine now ... Critical Defense 110gr FTX

You said you dont like .223 ARs, so get a .300blk AR and your done if you reload for it. Hang a supressor in it if you want a quiet HD gun with .45ACP +P/.30 carbine power with 30rd capacity. Supers give you 7.62x39/.30-30 power.

10.5" gives you plenty of power in supersonic to hunt with but the long range thing isnt going to be really in the mix.

The Grendel is a fine round but honestly the .300blk does 85% of things you want better with cheaper and bigger mags, and brass is much easier to acquire

I put a sign on my front door that entry without permission was unlawful. Seems to be working...

A CZ Scorpion would be a great option, and was my next purchased until I had to buy a Smith revolver because.

Also, a .300AAC blackout AR pistol is a good option. At 8.5-10.5 inch barrels they still have some good ballistics especially at home defense range. Ammo is a bit expensive for something you load 30 at a time for, but it isnt terrible.

I’m cracking steel at the 200 yard target with mine! It fun as hell to Shoot!

I think 300 will be the way to go. I’m planning on getting a 30 cal can this year so, it’ll work there. It’ll give me a reason to get a progressive press and load for it. My single stage would take forever

It sounds like you're just looking for someone to tell you to go ahead and do it, so...

I load rifle on a single stage, doesn’t take as long as you think. And starting on a single to get the hang of it isn’t a bad idea.

Ruger PCC with a TLR7 and Holosun HS510C has taken the place of a AR for my dedicated HD gun, meets my needs just fine and my wife is much more comfortable using it rather than a AR.
Has already proven itself dispatching a coyote couple of weeks ago.
Plus shares magazines with the EDC and nightstand gun if that's a thing your into.

I agree and your logic is sound . In hunting the goal is to kill and harvest the meat. In self defense the goal is to stop the threat.

Two totally different roles for bullet performance.

My 7 1/2” 300blk AR pistol with a SB3 brace is extremely fun, youre note than welcome to shoot mine to see if you like it.

I plan on getting a folding hinge and a bag to make it my truck gun at some point as well.

300 blackout with a can, pick your bbl length. 10.5 works well. Also where do you live? Middle of no where you might need more than a pistol if the fight rolls outside. My buddy cooled one in the house and 2 outside in the getaway car who were armed. 300 BO no trouble thru the Nissan Altima. Very justified YMMV

Wish Winchester would get off their ass and make a .350 Legend lever gun. That would be great for this role.

Being a contrary type, I'm voting for an underfolder AK and at least two magazines of go the hell away. It's 30cal, ammo is everywhere, and absolutely reliable. I don't need moa accuracy down the hall. Short? Yup it's an underfolder. But realistically, house/room clearing is a very bad idea even if it is home turf. Better to hole up and stay on the phone with 911 and tell the LEOs responding they damn well better ID themselves or there will be a Russian accented lead blizzard.
