It's the sauce that makes this meal!!!
I took a chance so I could learn just how durable are my emergency rations.
This is a civilian MRE, reportedly FEMA surplus from Hurricane Katrina (2005). They were stored in a warehouse before I bought them, so less than ideal conditions. Then I put this one in my GHB and let it ride around in the trunk of my car for a few years. Even worse conditions. But is it still edible? I had to find out.
Opening the sealed pouch the contents smells like sugar, which makes sense as everything was coated with sticky residual from the melted bag of skittles and two hard candies inside.
Aside from the sugar, nothing was amiss. The salt water packet for activating the heater was full, and the heater worked. The cracker was crisp and bland, the fig bar was chewy, and the moist wipe was still moist. But the raisins... WTH is an osmotic raisin anyway? I always toss those.
The Chicken noodle stew was actually decent tasting after 15-18 years of abuse. I am both impressed and alarmed.
It's been 24 hours and no gastro issues - I'm calling this a success!
