MONCURE, N.C. — Chatham County sheriff’s deputies called to three homes on a single property in Moncure Sunday evening found seven people dead in what they characterized as a murder-suicide.

A teenage boy, hiding in his bedroom closet, called 911 just after 5 p.m. to report a gunman in his house.

A family member told WRAL News that a man named Larry Ray shot six adults and then himself.

Deputies identified the dead as:

Jeanie Ray, 67, the wife of the suspected gunman;
Helen Mason, 93, his mother-in-law;
Mason's guests, Lisa Mansfield, 54, and her husband Ellis Mansfield, 73;
and John Paul Sanderford, 41, and Nicole Sanderford, 39.

Relatives said Ray first shot his wife, then the three adults at Mason's house, then the Sanderfords in their home.

It was their 16-year-old son who called 911. The Sanderfords' 13-year-old son was not home during the attack.

Relatives said they don't know what sparked the attack.

“To lose any family member is devastating, but to lose several at once to unexpected violence is unimaginable," said Sheriff Mike Roberson.

Law enforcement officers from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation were on the scene as much as 12 hours after the original call about shots fired.

Freaking horrible.
Today, near me (near @DCGallim too), some guy shot his gf in the head at a store, apparently and then took off.
Freaking wild.

That’s at least 3 horror stories on the end of town since I’ve lived here. There was the guy in Friendship that offed his girlfriend. Then there were the teenagers that killed the kid in a love triangle down Old Route 1 a little farther. Dangerous crap over there.

We searched for 1.5 years looking to find a place to build, love it here. The guy had a very nice home, it’s like he had a full schizophrenic episode.

There seems to be an uptick in craziness over the last few months. Family annihilation type stuff. o_O

One of the victim’s cousin’s supplies me with logs. It’s a very sad situation.

Moncure is right down the road from Pittsboro, and the very large Sheriff's Office.

The story I read said a boy, hiding in his closet, called 911 to report someone shooting inside his house.

You wanna guess how long it took deputies to drive a few miles and arrive on scene?

TWENTY THREE MINUTES...

Carry everywhere, even in your home. LEO is not going to make it in time to save you...

If they had to come from Pittsboro, 23 minutes is fast. Sunday there was an undercover Explorer going that direction in what appeared to be 90mph in a 35.

Might be fast, but still not fast enough.

My urging that we all should carry, at all times, and take responsibility for our own protection still stands...

What a monster. Unreal. While I find it difficult to commit enough emotional time for myself and my own family, I can’t help but take a moment to imagine the kids pain and challenges ahead. What an existential crisis this is for two teenaged boys. Not sure what path their lives were on to begin with, but doesn’t really matter as their lives have just flipped upside down.

Some become hardened like a diamond and mega successful, others wither away drowning themselves in drugs and despair. Absolutely horrible.

this country unfortunately uses these opportunities to fund and legislate gun doctrine, rather than clinical psych research and policy. Damn shame.

Of course, takes longer to come from the other side of the county thats closer to the orange county line. You know, where you always see patrol cars.
