i find myself thinking maybe i dont need guns i dont use often or ever, i dont have kids to leave my guns to and the wifes kids barely touch guns. At times i think maybe i should hang on to them in case the country implodes and i need to defend the castle but i really dont see this happening. As i age(67) and cant hunt or afford to target shoot as often im thinking i dont need a bunch of safe queens, OPINIONS?, THOUGHTS? feel free to argue my points

I have children who will enjoy them.

My Dad is 75. There are no indicators that he'll be singing Sweet Chariot anytime soon, but I've been trying to talk him into selling off as much of his collection, as he can stomach. He's free to will any of them to anyone he likes, but if he goes old school, I'm really the only son (out of four), that could take the collection.

Two sons are married to liberal women, and although one son is still actually right-leaning, to keep the peace, he would probably only take something that he feels sentimental over. The other son, although he's left-leaning, is not against firearms, but he doesn't rule the roost, if you know what I mean. The other, other son is a felon several times over. So, no dice, there.

That leaves me, and I would prefer he cash out now and get something he would really enjoy, like a tractor, perhaps.

In fact, I'm considering selling off some of mine, just to stash enough cash to get me out of the factory, soon.

In my opinion, alone, is ā€œenoughā€ depends completely on the person. If they donā€™t make you happy, sell them. If you enjoy having them, keep them. No explanation needed. If the world implodes that badly there will be plenty of firearms lying around on the ground.

Moved a couple years ago and inventoried everything - they tend to accumulate.
Had 47 handguns plus similar number of long guns. Many are dedicated to a particular competition specialty (or were intended for those) and many are general purpose, some are casual collectibles.

Trying to thin the herd but it gets to be a full time job. Fun to buy/sell/swap.

Seems a lot easier to acquire than divest! Though I'm a few years behind you, I'm at a similar point. If you don't have a passel of young'uns who are as enthusiastic about your collection as you are, then it's probably time to start selling.

If you don't, then 1) they're not doing you any good; 2) they're tying up money that you could get better use of; and 3) if you go and they haven't gone, they become a burden on your loved ones and are are prone to being dispersed to the unscrupulous for far less then their value, which does no-one any good.

That said, it's a lot easier to acquire than divest... :D

I do not officially know how many guns I own. I need to inventory and record. It's likely somewhere north of 50 and south of 70.

I have four kids. Both my daughters have intellectual/developmental disabilities. My two sons will inherit quite a collection if things continue on course.

Whether we like it or not, at some point we each will reach a stage in our lives where we realize our own mortality is overtaking us and we need to do some planning for various things.

With respect to firearms, I like to think that I'll find each a good home, whether with family, friends, or whomever.

Doesn't mean I'll necessarily adopt them all out to new homes, but certainly several.

There you go with the hated "need" term. My older sister asked me why I "needed" an AR with a 30 rd mag.... ONCE.... (it was actually funny, her husband cringed when the words were escaping her lips)

I've lost count, my buying has slowed but not stopped. I typically gauge my purchasing by the wife's reaction. When I start getting "another one!" I'll back off for a bit. Fair being fair, she is the referee financially or we would probably be broke all the time.

With that said, considering another safe, ran out of room some time ago. Hey, it's not "another one"....

Where is your happiness here?
Does using them make you happy?
if you donā€™t use them, does having them make you happy?
would it make you smile to sell a few to like minded folks?

If there was some easy way to sell off the 75% of the guns I don't shoot anymore in one chunk, I would avail myself of that.

Something that doesn't bring joy and has no use, no reason not to get rid of it... unless you think they'll ban them. That's always the issue with guns, at some point you will not be able to change your mind and go back (legally).

Having them and using them both make me happy. I also get happiness from giving some to friends and family so they can be happy using them and having them.

Thatā€™s nice of you to think of your dads happiness. Most people would look forward to the inheritance.

Youā€™re a decent son

I'm your age and in the same position. Chicken Lady has her two guns that she likes to shoot and that's it for her. Grandson moved to Charlotte and really don't give a hoot about shooting anymore. My daughter would sell them for what she could get out of them. Going to start culling next year. I would like to donate to some juniors but don't know how to find the right ones.

The only reasonable plan I can come up with is to shoot everything I've got (except one safe queen) and the ones that don't give me a tingly feeling that runs up my leg are gonna go away. That way I end up with stuff I like to shoot rather than stuff I'm just hanging on to. I need a tiller and a lot of other stuff next year and will need the cash anyway.

I'm serious but not in a hurry.................

I resemble that remark! At this point, I'm not even sure if I'm buying duplicates of some stuff or not!
How could that possibly happen? ;)

I used to make fun of folks that would buy a gun and then not get around to shooting it for years. Then I grew up.

I think they do pretty well vs inflation so Iā€™m in no hurry to sell.

Is there anything else you want to do before you die? Anything you want to buy so you can say you owned one? Trips to take? Is everyone in your life taken care of to the point that you are comfortable with? These are the questions id ask myself in your shoes. No wrong answer. It's your life, live it how you want.... my .02 cents

Interesting question, and there have been some really good responses above. I think what you are feeling is something that many gun owners with a sizable collection feels from time to time. For example, I have guns that use for work, teaching, hunting, and collecting. Since I do not hunt like before, Iā€™ve actually thought about selling some of my hunting rifles. However, when I glance over each rifle deciding itā€™s fate. I am reminded of all the good times with family and friends on different hunts and all the game I have taken with each rifle. It becomes a very difficult dilemma, much more than I own to many guns.

About 4 or 5 years ago I decided that I had way to many safe queens that had never been fired. They were all N framed S&W revolvers So I found several guys that had plenty of money that I really wanted more than the revolvers that I knew I'd never shoot. So I sold nearly $9500 worth.. Wish I had them back? Not really. I still have plenty to take out of the safes to wipe down several times a year. And drool over.. I still have several of each caliber. I have not fired .But if I decide to sell anymore of them they will be listed here for the CFF family to give them new homes.
