Has anyone on here handled or shot one? I just discovered these while looking around on Gunbroker and I am a sucker for super light mountain rifles. Specs say under 5 lbs and under $1k. I’m highly intrigued…

The regular 1500 models have a nice bottom metal and internal mag. This model appears to have a detachable mag which likely lightens the rifle by ditching the bottom metal. I’d really want to see the quality of that mag system before purchasing it. While I’m sold on Howa quality and own something like 3 of them, the howa mini action polymer magazine was absolutely trash and required an aftermarket bottom metal fix. it ended up costing around $200 to fix a budget rifle.

the standard short action 1500 is their flagship model and I’m pretty sure you would be happy with this super lite model although honestly I’d want to inspect the howa factory detachable mag on The super lite before buying it. The super lite also uses a thinner profile bolt and would want to know if that might cause compatibility issues with all the howa aftermarket stocks.

as a last resort, I have a few howa bottom metals and hogue stocks laying around, and can gladly sell you the solution for what could be a junk mag system. The standard 1500 308 sporter profile rifles are a smidge over 5 lbs. honestly I’d rather go that route and have the nice factory bottom metal.

Awesome!! Thanks for the great info. I’ll see if I can find one in stock around here to handle and then I’ll decide which route to go.

I bought my daughter a .223 1500 Howa. (She now shoots a fully customized .308 or 6.5)

I just can't bring myself to sell it... Pulling it from the box and shooting bone stock, I was in love. It is my favorite shooter. Like a flush sand wedge.

If the internals feel the same -- hell, I'd buy one! (Provided it meets the MOA of my current one)

I’ll be looking at them this weekend. I have a feeling I will probably feel the same.

I only have the mini action in 6.5G. But as @92G says, their bottom "metal" and mags are trash. Mostly the bottom metal {plastic}. There is a guy making a bottom metal for the minis that uses CZ mags. I went with the internal mag and flush floor plate.

The rifle itself is a laser. I have mine in a B&C stock

My mini action (223) runs this aftermarket internal mag. high quality steel internal mag, although such expenses shouldn’t be needed if Howa / Legacy had their act together on the mini! Even with this cost, it’s still a solid value and great rifle.

That's the one I currently have on my 6.5G mini

I looked at this rifle also, but for the same price, Sportsman’s has the bergara ridge carbon on sale and I grabbed one of those in 6.5CM.
Just a hair over 7lbs with the leupold.

the bergaras are very nice R700 clones, but aren't these well over $1k? A howa 1500 is under $500, granted it has nowhere near the tricks or doo-dads of the Bergara (e.g. carbon fiber wrapped barrel). The Bergaras are still good value just in another league above the Howa.

The howa super lite I was looking at was $1200-$1300

got it. yeah between those two I'd go with the Bergara for sure, and that's coming from a Howa fan. The Bergaras have a level of refinement and fit-finish that the Howa isn't going to rival. Also resale value on the Bergara will be much better.

I agree. That howa supposedly is under 5lbs.
I had a typo in my previous post. It’s just over 8lbs, not 7.
