Curious on peoples thoughts or experiences. I seems like on most forms this type of question ends up with people saying that anything less than a Barrett 50 BMG is unable to subdue the mighty whitetail...
oops.interesting, i was actually primarily referring to using a carbine not a pistol.
Killed them with a .357 out of a marlin carbine.
With pistol calibers you had better be a good tracker.
Accuracy is king.
just a few things to consider.
Peestol boolits in a riffle is like putting a lawmower motor in a Porche.Do you not own a suitable rifle?? I'll happily loan you one....
And a .17.... ask me how I knowI've heard tell you can take the mighty beasts down with a 22mag...

Seen a guy do it once. 8pt buck, right behind the ear. DRTdo tell...
I heard a story a while back about a family that lived back in the woods (don't know how long ago or even if it's true) and would be visited every so often by their native Indian friend who would borrow a 22 rifle and two bullets. By the end of the day he would return the rifle and one bullet. The idea being that he was so good at stalking that he would get close enough to shoot them in the eye/ear, etc.The oldsters here swear there have been more deer taken in Horry with a 22 LR than all else combined.
357 is fine for deer at closer ranges. Whitetails aren't as tough as they're often made out to be. a 90-150lb deer doesn't need a cartridge designed with moose hunting in mind to get the job done.
If you're a good shot with the carbine, and can get the deer in to brush-gun ranges, you'll do fine as long as you hit it in the vitals.
