Hello. New to NC. Looking for hunting opportunities. Unfortunately, don't know any landowners yet. Wondering where people usually go in NC, public/private land, hunting leases, etc. Any pointers would be helpful!

I am in the same boat. I checked out the Alcoa Game lands and Perkins Game Land which are East of Mocksville last fall. Land looks good but now CWD has entered the picture and some of this land is in the " CWD Surveillance and Monitoring area".

Check out the NC Hunt and Fish forum. Occasionally they will have openings in hunt clubs. But most are east of 95. As far as states east of the Mississippi, NC is blessed with a lot of game lands and National Forests that are open to hunting. Gameland maps and information are available at NCWildlife.org. The last time I checked there were a few extra deer hunting permits available on select gamelands that have permit hunts that limit the number of nimrods per day.

That is interesting about the Select gamelands that limit the number of Hunters. I am going to check into that, but still in need of a pardner.

I checked it out about 10 minutes ago. I can purchase an Archery permit for $8.00 + $2.00 processing fee. The land I looked at Second Creek Game Land was the closest to me. This permit is only good for Archery season so it expires 10/28/22. Read some reviews, not much game, steep, easy to get stuck. Might investigate more before I decide.

After Archery and MZ season you can use whatever you want unless it is a permit hunt. Each GL has it's own rules and hunting days so it pays to do your homework. I have found that "walk-in" GL's are tough places to hunt as they are full of hunters unless you are willing to get away from the roads and trails. The demand for hunting land is simply outrageous. I own a 100 acres so I'm a bit spoiled. Annual dues for some of the better clubs run $1500 and up and they have waiting lists!

I was a bit spoiled in SC too. I had a bunch of land around my house and within a 15 minute drive that was Archery only for Big Game. It had a varied degree of hunting pressure. I was a member of a Club too that had 900 acres and was partially surrounded by National Forest which was open to hunting too.
Then I moved up here and I am slowly learning where to go. Getting to old for these learning curves. I did have 2 Deer within 10 yds of my Bowstand Monday but it was a small Doe and her Fawn that looked like it had just lost its spots. I just watched.
