I’m going to see if I can help my wife buy a Subaru. Maybe tomorrow.

I bought a 2019 outback last March. Almost 30k miles later I would do it again. I hear a lot of smack talk but nobody says anything when they hear my mpg or ride in it. Mine is one level up from the base and has more features than I need. My next vehicle purchase will likely be another Subaru.

The “premium” trim level, right? I finally found one without either of the two option packages, the second of which has a moonroof, as I believe all seven higher level trim packages also have. It’s an an hour and 45 minutes away, so we are headed there this morning.

I think it’s got everything we need and nothing we don’t.

What's the issue with buying Subaru?
In the 1990’s Subaru ran some targeted ads at one of the main groups of people buying their cars. That group was lesbians. It was a very successful ad campaign for the brand but now a lot of people associate Subaru as being a lesbian car.

I think it’s the premium model. Everything I would have wanted except a moonroof. Power everything except passenger seat, x mode and a nice touch screen radio with cloth heated seats.

My wife loves her Subaru. This is her third Outback. My three daughters also have Subarus - Foresters. I like driving it myself.

Are they still using the cvt transmission? I've driven other makes with a cvt and not liked the way they drive...like there's a rubber band propelling it.
They do. I drove one, albeit 45 mph and under. I think it was a 2022. If I didn’t know it was CVT, I wouldn’t have noticed at all. Even then it felt like a regular transmission.

But as mentioned, it’ll be my wife's daily and she won’t care, but I’ll drive it back and fourth to Charleston routinely to see my old mom, plus on what few trips we ever take, so we wanted something with seats and an interior that actually accommodates a full-sized human bean. My wife is 5’5”, 125”, but I’m a foot taller and 100 lbs heavier.

That's now how it works. You're supposed to go over-pay in Cary and have them transfer it from that dealership so they pay me $100 to go get it.

Damn, think of us little people, we need pocket money to feed our 9mm addiction.

What’s crazy is the big honkin Olds 98s and Buick Park Aves I bought used and drove for years got 30-32 mpg on the road with those 3.8 V-6s
That's because emission standards were different then. My wife had a 99 Toyota Camry V6 that pretty much stayed 28mpg.

I had a first year Outback Wilderness for a bit. Was comfortable enough. Didn't make me any more of a lesbian than I already am which was disappointing.
Had a couple minor issues they hopefully have worked out since then that the dealer claimed they couldn't hear or find but I'd probably get one again.

I took my son out in our 2004 Forester to give him exposure driving in bad weather. It was such a beast in the ice/snow that we had to go swap into my Nissan so he could see what slippery roads were like.
Had the same experience teaching my daughter to drive in snow. I had to make her actually hit the gas going around corners so the dang car would actually slip a little so she could feel what it’s like. She owns an Impreza now.

I never considered the Subaru's lesbians to be girly vehicles, especially the new ones. They have a more masculine look to them especially when you know about the off road capabilities they have.
Sorry; I just couldn't resist.

EDIT: I got nothin' against Subarus! Have driven one once or twice & liked it (WRX), plus they have a loyal - and diverse! - following. I have even recommended them to family members.

By the way, per the TV & radio commercials in Okinawa in 1970, it's pronounced su-BA-ru!

Turns out it originally came from the Durham store, I guess they traded to this dealer down east where we saw it on-line and bought it. So one of youse guys drove it down there.

Success.

So, I called my insurance agent, @Amp Mangum , to add the new wheels to my policy.

Me: “Amp, I’ll email you the VIN when I get home."
Him: “So when you gonna pick-up a pair of Birkenstocks."

Then I called my youngest son, who wears Birkenstocks, and asked him where I should shop for a pair.

He laughed and said,
“Well you got the right vehicle for that."
"Go ahead and put a Grateful Dead sticker in the window so you can get pulled by the police."

I’m pretty sure he has one in his window.

Starbucks has a promotion running. Drive any new Subaru thru their drivethru and they’ll give you a Decaffeinated Tofu and Bean Sprout Macchiato at half price. 🤓

Congrats on the new car!
I agree about the moonroof - I don’t want or need it.
We just got a 2005 forester for my soon-to-be 16 year old daughter from my aunt and uncle. The moonroof doesn’t work - wont open even using the manual crank “emergency” tool that comes with the car.
Unfortunately it leaks unless the car is parked with the nose pointing uphill, but I can’t clear the sunroof drains since I can’t get the roof open. And I’m not pulling out the headliner to mess with it that way.
I’m getting ready to caulk it shut as soon as it warms up a little more outside.

Good luck with the new driver, and the caulk.

We pass our cars around the family, too. Assuming it survives, this car will eventually be titled to three different people with my last name before it’s all over.

Wife is on her second Outback, first one killed a F-250 (Outback drove away, Ford had to be flat bed towed).

She went with top of the line trim package and the turbo ( the non-turbo would hardly get out of its on way on highway speeds).

I like it ok,,,like the safety and snow/ slick road abilities, all the driver assist are nice for her.

But dang, they need to add some sound proofing and some more pad to the seats. My Ford King Ranch is so much better on long trips!

I would buy an Outback and drive it. It was in the top ten vehicles in customer satisfaction. If I lived in the NC mountains it would be my choice over 4x4 trucks. They rock in bad climate. When I went to the slopes the parking lot would have lots of Outbacks.

My wife got an AWD Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid two weeks ago. Very comfy and has everything. She had to get the moonroof because all the XSE on the assembly line are with moonroof. They took it off the price. She may want to test drive it. It is a new model mini SUV in late 2022. Looks exactly like a Rav4 but slightly less interior.
We test drove a '23 AWD Cross XSE before we drove the Outback. The Toyota was pretty nice, but we were floored by the Outback. I was shocked at how nice it was & man, does that little wagon get down the road. GF's got a lead foot & gets 21-22 mpg driving a half hour to work each way. I don't baby it & got 27-28 mpg taking the back roads down to Eureka Springs, AR & back a couple months ago.

"Stigma" or jokes aside, they're pretty impressive rides. Wish they'd offer that Crosstrek with the turbo. That'd be a hella fun ride.
