I've spent weeks, WEEKS, looking for a CC class in reasonable distance from me. Found one, I'm all set. At the same time, I've been looking for a public range that's not two hours away an has decent reviews. Just found Harrison Creek in Fayetteville. You have to pay to park there, but that seems OK, right? Any input on this place?
Is this a big secret club that I can't get in? Lol. Maybe I'm meant to set something safe on my property, making sure I have enough "stuff" to catch my rounds...
I just figured I could google ranges and find some nearby! NOT!
Excuse the ranting...I'm a bit tired of trying to do this.....

Ouch. The Harrison Creek Gun Club sounds pretty expensive. At least $20 a day or $10 a day on top of an annual membership of $200 seems high to me.

Is there some other Harrison Creek range in Fayetteville?

Would it be too far to go to Ellerbe? The John Lentz Hunter Education Complex or Sandhills Shooting Range is free - just bring your own targets and ammo.
Found Blackstone in Charlotte! Wow! Looks like it's for the rich folk but sounds really nice! Ellerbe is far. I might have to go far!!! I'll look up Sandhills shooting, thanks!

Why don't you just shoot in your backyard?
I'd love, to but I guess you need to go to the "how far will it go?" thread....it caused a bit of an uproar! Lol.
We're talking trees, bales of hay, tromping thru the woods, building berms, sheetrock and phone books, and assorted other stuff! Oh, cinderblock garages! I'm about to say the hell with it and digging up the property and making my own range...it'd be short, but....safer than shooting a tree!

Hey Millie if you’re thinking of coming all the way to Charlotte, Firepower Inc and Point Blank ranges in Matthews would be about 20 minutes closer to you. Point Blank is a lot like Blackstone (has more of a rich guy feel). Firepower has a less polished feel but they are good guys. I only live like 7 minutes from Blackstone but haven’t been there yet. I just moved to NC myself a few months ago. I’m planning on checking out Blackstone this week and can let you know. Their prices don’t seem to bad ($39/month).

Thanks, I'll look into those in Matthews. I'd really like to stay in the one hour range at most. But we'll see...

I still maintain you should buy yourself a good pair of tall boots and explore your property. You just might find an area that already will provide the backstop you need. I have a bunch of them where water flows thru my land.

Millie, see if there happens to be a "Well Armed Woman" chapter in your neck of the woods. My wife is a member here and really enjoys it. The group meets once a month at the range, spends the first hour on different topics such as holsters, active shooter scenarios, first aid, etc and then moves to the range for next hour or two shooting. The chapter leader is usually an NRA certified instructor/trainer and the instruction my wife has gotten has been great.

Just a thought. Look under the "Chapters" tag if your interested. Could be another source for assisting you through your introduction to firearms, shooting, training and accessories.

CR-PC works for me but it's only 25 min drive not 2 hrs. And it's not crack, it's kool-aid.
I got nothing close to @Millie, sorry. I do know we have forum members who live nearby so maybe if you sent up the bat signal you'd get some feedback from local-to-you folks.

I think the closest chapter was a bit far, I'll check it again though. I've been reading so much stuff the last few weeks, my mind is getting scrambled!

How far are you from Guns Plus in Spring Lake. They hav a nice indoor range and I think it's free for Ladies on Wednesday's
Not sure, will check. Thanks!.......I went to the site. I'm thinking Fayetteville and surrounding area is going to be where I end up! It's not that far, I'm just not fond of driving in actual FVille, so Spring Lake might work!

There was/is this cool lil gun shop in WAGRAM, they might have an idea about the range there.
I've been to the shop, but the range might be closed. I'll be going to the shop again to find d out for sure.

My property isn't too large, so not much to explore. And it's got lots of trees, and it's flat as a table. No water flows, except to my well. I guess I could make a berm somehow, but how is another question. Any "range" I create will be short! Lol. I love the idea, though.

I borrowed a tractor from my bro in law and made a berm in about 3 hrs. For pistol rounds, you don't need a 50ft high berm.
How high does it need to be? I'm not going to think about a tractor! Though I may know someone who has access to one.....

I would build it as high as you can and as wide as you can, and call it a day. 16ft high with a 1-1 slope or steeper is what most pistol ranges under 50yds are.

16' high with other considerations from these EPA range design guidelines:
https://energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2013/05/f1/Range_Design_Criteria.pdf

For open ranges, the top elevation of the earth impact berm should be 26 feet above the range surface for ranges 100 yards long or longer and 16 feet above the range surface for ranges 50 yards long or less.
...
...
The preferred slope of the impact berm face is 1 to 1 or steeper. The steeper the slope, the more likely the berm is to absorb projectiles. The top should be 10 feet wide. The impact slope should be constructed with a 3-foot layer of easily filtered soil (to reclaim the lead projectiles) free of boulders, trees, rocks, stones, or other material that will cause ricochet.

That last bit is important - I've shot at berms made from unsuitable material and experienced ricochets - it's not fun.

Keep in mind that most self defense engagements occur at extremely close range. I've seen claims that the actual range is often 7 to 10 feet while many talk about 7 yards. This is probably why the NC CHP test only requires you to demonstrate proficiency out to 21 feet. If you're training for self defense, you don't need to build a rifle range.

Near Wagram....way in the woods lol.
Wow you are really far down there. I was going to extend an invitation to my private range I shoot at with my son and friends but Google says it's an hour and 15min for you. It's only 50 - 80 yards but we have fun and are very safe. I'm not officially an instructor but have 15 recent years of experience and an expired NRA pistol instructors license, lol. I do recommend you get professional training from one of our sponsors here when you are able.

BTW this goes for anyone here, always looking for people to shoot with. Range is between Pittsboro and Sanford.

Yep I'm practically in SC...lol. I might have to come up there if nothing pans out close-ish to home!!! Or make my own range!

You may want to consider buying a dump truck load of clean fill dirt. Have it dumped on the backside/safest part of your property. Instant berm! Make sure that they know you want to shoot into it so no rocks.
Haw far is it for you to drive to Flintlock in the Uwharries?

A couple of hours maybe? I'd have to mapquest it to be sure. Like the instant been!

Did you check out Blackstone yet? Let me know how it was, if you don't mind.

Millie. Check out Moore County Wildlife and Conservation Club. Theyre located in the Southern Pines/Sanford area.

I am a member at Blackstone and shoot there often.

The place as a whole is overpriced, I won't defend them there.

They have a moderate selection of firearms to rent, if you're still looking to try out new guns.

It definitely has a clean, high tech, new facility feel to it. It's well maintained and well staffed. This is likely the leading justification for their prices.

If you plan a trip and schedules allow, I'd be happy to meet you there, introduce you to the range and save you a few bucks (member's guests pay less).

All that said, I'm only a member there because it's so close & convenient located between work and home. If I could safely/legally shoot on my own property I'd definitely make that happen.

I was curious about what it was like there, so thanks for letting me know!
I've actually shot "a few " guns lately, and have found my perfect one.
Thanks for the invite. It's a bit far for me, though, and I think Jim's in Fayetteville is my go-to for now. It's the closest to the range here in town, where I'm on a list for membership if anybody drops out.
It was nice of you to take the time to respond to my question.
Happy shooting!!!

LetsGoShooting.org is a cool site for new shooters and has a search function to find ranges in your area and other areas.
