I've run out of reasonable "I want" rifles. Don't have a shotgun. Probably should. I have zero interest in hunting birds or sporting games with shotguns.
Here's my dilemma. Whatever I end up with will probably never be used by me. Ever.
I have champagne taste in guns. I'm the a-hole that HK successfully markets and sells guns to. That's coloring my want list. I'm not into Gucci. I'm into what I perceive as quality.
My short list is Beretta 1301 Tactical in black or green or a Mossberg 590.

I don't want to trick it out. I do want a sling on it. Maybe a little extra shell capacity and storage for a reload on the side/stock.
Shotguns are not supposed to have pistol grips.

I want a new/modern one, not an old police trade in. Is there something else I should be looking at?

Edit to add...I will likely take a defensive shotgun class or three once I get one. Keep that in mind.
After that I'll oil it and forget it.

Seems to fit. My M1 S90's can do everything an M4 can do.

Exactly what I was going to say, since you like HK’s.

Otherwise, a 1301 tactical is on my wish list as well.

NEF 870 clone. I have 2 of them. Cheap, dependable and ..... less than 900 dollars! lol. Chinese (Norinco) made. It is called a pardner pump. I have some Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s, but this one goes bang and you can get it for about 230 or so dollars.

Keep in mind that I am the guy who will buy a Toyota or Honda over a Mercedes every time (yes, I have owned all 3).

Between the two you posted, the 1301. Much better than the Mossberg in overall fit, finish and "feel." If you have champagne tastes the 590 is not that. It's a good, solid, practical pump action shotgun but a sip of champagne it isn't.

I like funky old school pump guns. I have an 870 Police Magnum with walnut stock. It fits my bill but probably not yours.

I’d go with the M1 H&K made option.
I’ve had one for ~20 years and it isn’t for sale.
That one also allows you to add an additional round in the carrier. The post HK’s don’t, but that’s a super easy $0.010 modification.
Mine cycles everything from skeet/bird shot to buck with no issues. Since it isn’t gas. It has inly required being wiped down with an oil tag periodically.
I’ve only had to replace a $10 magazine spring.

Never noticed the M1S90 kicking like a mule. When my oldest son was 5 y/o, he loved to go to the turkey shoot and shoot the Benelli. They would bring out a plastic Pepsi crate from him to stand on and he would rest the shotgun on the rail. As soon as he shot, he was all grins saying I want to do it again. He moved up to shooting my 1911 when he was 7 y/o.

Same here, was used to shooting 870's, so the M1 is a pleasure. There is a difference, the M4 is even softer shooting, but not too sure it's $600 - $800 softer, especially for a gun that will probably never be used, as the OP posted.

But if I had money to burn, I'd buy an M4 also.

I recently picked up a 1301 comp pro and it is very nice. High quality, lightweight, and soft shooting. I would recommend it, as well as its tactical cousin, without hesitation.
Where? Somewhere local?

This should scratch your Gucci itch and do whatever you need it to do.

If I were you, I’d go with an early marker HK M series benelli. An M3 is a funky, unique gun. Barring that, you sound like a M4/1301 type of guy. I had a 590a1 and, while completely bombproof & more than capable, I found it heavy & unwieldy.

But I’m a shotgun guy with around 10, still rookie numbers.

GO BIG OR GO HOME!
Then buy this in the BST …

If you are not going to use it, and it’s just going to sit in the safe, research guns with highest resale.
Maybe just get a Benelli M2. They always hold value and sell well.
Can’t go wrong with the M2. A lot of Gucci accessories, great resale value. Soft shooting, with minimum maintenance.

So did you get the Recoil Gunworks Labor Day sale on the 1301 LE-model?
Berelli @ $1249. It went out of stock after mine shipped, so I think I got the last one. Straight stock, LE model.

Looking like FedEx didn't bone the shipping. Still haven't heard from the FFL. I did get a call I ignored from "private caller". Might have been FFL. Might have been that scammer from South Africa. I'll never know. Just going to drop on on Saturday I think.

Now I have a shotgun. Let's celebrate with the parody song, "This Land is My Land."

Out in the country, far from a highway
There is this land here, and it is my way
Don't ever come here, or you'll be sorry
This land was made just for me

This land is my land, it isn't your land
I got a shotgun, and you don't got none
If you don't get off, I'll blow your head off
This land was made just for me

So keep away now, Don't ruin my day now
My property's private, you cannot buy it
Go find your own land, Just be a lone man
This land was made just for me

This land is my land, it isn't your land
I got a shotgun, and you don't got none
If you don't get off, I'll blow your head off
This land was made just for me

Shopping for your next one yet?!
LoL. Not yet. This one needs food and accessories. And I need a class to learn how to best manipulate and reload this one.
One thing I didn't expect was this one to be so seriously handy due to weight and size. I'm only 5'10" so shorter long guns fit me well.

(I had intended for this to be a shopping comparison, but the discussion took on a life of its own as I thought it over.)

I know pump shotguns are about as idiot-proof as you can get in a shotgun. I would personally not want a semi-auto shotgun as a home defense gun because of the increased probability of jamming. I believe the probability of a good quality semi jamming at just the wrong time is low, but it's not zero, and it's multiples higher than jamming a pump gun. We can debate this further later or in another thread.

But can I trust my home defense to a $144 shotgun? If it checked out on the range, was properly cleaned and lubed, what's the possibility of it not functioning correctly when needed? I put the Nova and 870 prices up for comparison.

Even though I grew up with a Wingmaster 16 gauge pump, I know I can't shoot it as fast as someone can a semi-auto shotgun if the semi is shouldered. But un-shouldered, I could come close to putting accurate shots on target after the pump action. Most folks with semis as HD guns would overload them with 3" or 3.5" magnums and recoil control would become an issue.

For an in-home self-defense gun I'd probably load 2.75" #6 or #7.5. My longest shot upstairs in my house from my bedroom door is 7 yards. A cylinder choke produces a pattern of about 19 inches at 10 yards according to a chart I found, so imagine a pattern of 394 count #7.5 shot say 16-17 inches wide hitting a target 7 yards away at 1070 fps (also 10 yard terminal velocity for 1295 fps muzzle velocity from a popular chart). Per this chart the ft/lbs of energy per pellet at 10 yards is 3.16, so the full pattern might feel like 1245 ft/lb of energy. I'm not sure it actually translates that way, but it would sure hurt a normal person. And it wouldn't tend to kill your neighbors if you missed.
