by the head of the department at ECU's school of midwifery. First of all, in the celebratory luncheon, a prayer was offered. Deliberately innocuous, deliberately worded generically, but acknowledging God as the author of life and the giver of power and purpose to the midwives. Even more interesting, though, was the simple little placard put on each of the tables. I have the picture below. THIS is how one "fights back" against workeness and affirms truth in a militantly secular environment. Someone asked her what that phrase meant. She was both guarded and clear in her response, explaining it is from the bible, where WOMEN in this profession refused to obey the command to kill, but instead affirmed life. She also personally contacted my daughter, asked when she would be taking boards and let her know that during that time, she would be praying for 15 mins for her.

Not glitzy. Not showy. Not in your face confrontative. Not determined to give a 15 paragraph affirmation of faith, listing all the implications of the gospel and how the culture is in error/decline. Just calmly and cheerfully and bravely affirming truth, goodness, love, and, most prominently, the value and role of women in setting standards in society, affirming gentleness, nurture, love and most importantly life beaaring. It was encouraging and instructive.... and quite surprising.
