Looking to shoot a few IDPA matches this year with my old Dan Wesson. I have a pancake-type holster that fits the gun, but it rides very high and is at an awkward angle for drawing. I'm looking for more of a straight drop type holster that rides as low as legal for IDPA. Can anyone recommend an IDPA-legal holster? The Dan Wesson is basically L-frame size.

I'm not a serious competitor trying to win, I'm just looking to get some revolver experience. Though I guess I might win the revolver division at some matches just by finishing the match! Thanks for any thoughts.

You might want to look through the IDPA rule book equipment portion to make sure you look for an acceptable holster and ammo carrier. Also keep in mind that you need to be able to conceal the gear. Using a revolver should be fun.

Thanks! I have been shooting USPSA recently in carry optics and really prefer that game to IDPA, but I am just not really keen on running a 6 shot revolver with speedloaders at a USPSA match. IDPA seems more appropriate to my equipment. I'd actually love to do ICORE classic, but I don't seem to have any matches within hours. I just hate to buy a holster that stinks just to try it out.

Try a ZSA match. I consider it IPSC light. Not as expensive to get into, no fancy holsters or mag pouches rigs needed. Any caliber is ok. Seen several shooters use .22s but you’ll lose points if you can’t knock over the occasional steel. I’ve used a 625 .45acp smith and my .45 pcc’s. Much more casual than an ipsc shoot and imo a lot more fun.

This.
If you do one of @John Z matches, you may have the pleasure of watching him with a Revo.

One of the best wheelgun shooters in existence. And designs super fun matches.

Wish I could do it, but it seems like the ZSA match sort of near me, at Central Carolina Gun Club, doesn't exist anymore. I can't do road trips to the coast for matches. :(

Thanks for that, getting older and slower these days!!! Now that we are Official IDPA and USPSA club, I do plan on running my revos in both those sports again, that is what I really enjoy. We are here to help, so PLEASE consider joining us at a match, and I'll do all I can to help you out with revolver shooting, John Z.

You guys are a lot tougher than this old man. The next 5th sat is on my birthday in April so hopefully you’ll do another WW2 shoot. I’ll have a resistance outfit and my Thompson ready by then. Hoping to get out next Saturday.
