If you are ever near Dayton Ohio

Loved it! "Stopped by" on a road trip, figured I'd give it 2 hours & return another time.

5+ hours later, after visiting every building/display and taking the bus to the Air Force One exhibit, I reluctantly hit the road again.

Absolutely worth it.

Absolutely agreed. The range of their collection is amazing. It starts with a Wright Brothers bicycle (bike makers before they became aviators). Standing under a suspended Fokker Tri-Wing and looking over an SR-71 Blackbird gave me chills.

The Hamfest and this museum would make a great vacation .

Since moving to NC21+years ago, Isuspect I've driven through Dayton 100 or more times. I've always wondered if it was worth it.

Side note :I-75 in Dayton has been under construction that entire 21 years.

The museum has come a >long< way since we visited back in the 1980s; when the XB-70, et al was still stored outside. I was pleasantly relieved when the were able to get pretty much everything under cover and protected. I would say Dayton/USAF Museum and Udvar-Hazy at Dulles are the two premier museums any aviation enthusiast should visit at least once. Udvar-Hazy, being a Smithsonian museum, adds in a fair amount of civil-aviation including the first Boeing 707, the first Learjet, etc. They also have the gondola of the first round-the-world balloon flight.

This is on my bucket list but there is nothing near Dayton where I would ever happen to be near by.

I think I may have to make a trip just to see the museum.
Absolutely worth the trip by itself, but if you need an additional reason. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame isnā€™t too far from Dayton.

My favorite part of the AFM was the Tuskegee Airmenā€™s memorial and display. The red tails of the 332nd Fighter Group have always been interesting to me. And the movie was excellent as well!!

SR 22 Blackbird. They have steps that go into te cockpit and rear seat that are cool as hell.

Back in the day, when Kermit Weeks had Fantasy of Flight open, he had a B-17 fuselage set up in a life-size diorama where you could step into the fuselage through the rear hatch and then travel up through the bomb-bay where he had a reverse projection screen from the bottom depicting a stick of bombs dropping out. It was really cool and the noise was unreal. Then you could continue forward and peer into the cockpit as you walked out onto an exit platform/stairs. The outside part of the diorama depicted an airfield with the maintenance guys working to replace a couple of engines.
