3 month old GE fridge at my son’s house crapped out yesterday. Looks like an evaporator fan motor on the fridge side is dead. Got a baby in the house. Freezer still working. No telling yet if part is readily available, so I’ve decided to replace my old school metal Coleman cooler with the broken latch that keeps ice about 36 hours best case.

Going from this:

To probably this:
Igloo IMX 70 on sale $179, regularly $219 (that’s in stock at the hardware store on the way to his house),
or the Yeti 65 at twice the price

Inside volume and specs look to be generally comparable, with a slight nod to the Igloo on interior space

My opinion might be skewed towards Igloo as my other son has an Igloo Playmate I bought for a customer golf tournament in 1981 that has had at least one empty boat trailer drug over it and still works perfectly (for what it is).

I would be a brazilianaire if I had a nickel for every Busch or Budweiser that once resided in that cooler for an afternoon.

I have the Yeti 65. Its a beast for keeping ice. I have a new Igloo and Rtic medium sizes as well. Nothing has held ice close to the Yeti units. I’ve tested them side by side.
Buy a stick of schedule 40 1” pvc pipe and a box of pvc 1” caps. Glue one side with cap in the length you like. Fill 2/3rds with water (room so they don’t crack) Glue other cap on. Freeze.

I have a bottom full length size and then 10” size for spacing in coolers. You always have unlimited ice.

I got a lifetime from Walmart for around $100, it held ice sitting in the bed of my truck over the summer for 4 days.
tests on YouTube showed it very similar to the yeti
Thanks. I did not know about those so I’m checking them out too. It looks like the Lifetime comparable in size to the ones above is $184. The Igloo is normally $219 but on sale for $179.

Edit: That said, if it tests like a Yeti it’s worth a look see.

Looks like Igloos are all made in USA since 1947.

Yeti makes the Tundra series here, the rest (like what I’m looking at) in the Philippines and ChyNAH.

Considering the lame refrigerator parts that kicked off this search are likely made of Chineseum, Igloo is looking better, on principal alone.

You’re paying for a name with yeti that’s it. It won’t hold ice any better than an ozark trails from Walmart. I have had a Pelican 65 for the last 7yrs and it has been excellent and Pelican’s lifetime warranty is outstanding as well. I once broke the latch only cooler, called pelican and no questions asked, they sent me out 2 replacement latches right away.

Ozark Trail stuff is testing very well against Yeti. I have their cups and soft coolers. I fell in love with the Yeti soft bag, but it's $300. So I got this for $39.95 instead. There's an American flag over the OT logo now.

I like my yetis. I’ve got a 65 a 20 and one of the older style bag coolers. The 65 stays in bed of my truck and eats a bag of ice per day in the summer being used a drink cooler for work. If it’s kept inside and packed full and not opened much they’ll hold ice for 8+ days.

Man I still gots ice from 2020 in my Yeti 65!!! Let us know how the IGLOO holds up! I have several brands of "tough" coolers and whie I am no brand snob I do prefer my Yeti overall.

I bought a kong and really like it. It has a couple things that make it stand out from the yeti. Made in the USA. A better latch, some really cool accessories like a bumper guard that keeps the lid from crushing kid fingers, etc.

Calcutta over either of them if you can find it. Larger inside than yeti. Better than the lower brands. Cheaper than the high end models. I love mine.

My dad tested an 80's Igloo weird teal and pink cooler older than me against my uncle's Yeti and the Igloo held ice for a day longer. I don't know what was going on there, but you could tell it hurt my uncle's feelings.

With your money, the Yeti is the best bet. I have transported stuff all over the country and it never thawed out.

long term storage, dry ice, just make sure you use a layer of protection between the “stuff” and the DI or it can burn it.

for long term ice, here is what we do:
get a huge cheap cooler and put a large cheap cooler inside of it.
put the ice in the large cooler and leftover ice in the gaps. close both lids.
(yeah, someone forgot to close the huge one, one time)

How heavy is the Igloo empty? All of the roto molded coolers that I've handled have been very heavy, even when empty. When loaded with ice and stuff, I couldn't even pick them up.
It’s a pig. 26lbs
But the Yeti is 29lbs

I have an Orca that I really like.

Based on a couple comments in this thread, I passed the Lifetime recommendation to my dad. He just texted me this:

BTW…he said it was $165-$170 online, and got it in-store for $107.

So are you just trying to make me feel bad?

Never mind, different cooler.

I just looked and the blue and gray coolers are $107 and the white one is $97 but about a week out for delivery. Might have to take a look at these. I have an RTIC 20 that works really well, but sometimes need something bigger.

Bought a Lifetime 77 qt. 2 weeks ago just before camp. Filled completely with ice on the 18th, then added 4 pre frozen gallons of water, a dozen small frozen water bottles and 2 flats of pre chilled Brawndo the thirst mutilator on the 19th. I covered the cooler with a thick blanket and didn't open it at all until last Wednesday.
I still have a small chunk of ice in one of remaing gallon jugs on the 27th. I'm shocked.

I have ozark and yeti coolers.

Haven’t used either since I got a Pelican. Hands down best cooler I’ve owned or used.

Did it sit inside or outside for those 9 days? (Wasn’t sure if this was at “camp” or a test before going)

Dang I am the opposite. I have a pelican 65 but it did not do nearly as well as my 65 Yeti in the same situation. I never use the Pelican, it is actually slated for a deer meat cooler this season. I bought a 45 RecTeq that I have found to be perfect for most of my uses. My Orca selection is a 26qt that gets used in the boat mostly and a 140 qt that gets very little usage. except on hunting trips.
