Alright guys I just joined up yesterday so here's my first post.
Sorry for the text wall. I was bored.
I have always loved 10/22s. It was the first gun I learned to shoot. I think I was like 4-5 years old. Had to shoot it off a rest wile sitting in my dads lap lol.
I learned to shoot at a friend's ranch out in West Texas. When I got a little older we were allowed to ride in the back of a truck and shoot at Jack rabbits. Man, those were the days...
Anyway fast forward to a little earlier this year my friend calls me and tells me his dad has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and will be dead in a few months. His dad was an awesome dude. He was like a father to me. I was really sad to hear the news and promptly went down there to see him one last time wile his brain was still functioning. It was an awesome trip.
When I was down there my friend told me that their old .22 finally kicked the bucket. I think it was around 30 years old and they hadn't taken great care of it. The thing finally stopped running. They thought it was the barrel so they put a cheap .920 green mountain barrel on it and slaughtered the bedding on the original stock to fit it. Also I don't think they realized they had switched to a match grade chamber which certainly didn't fix their problems. The gun had sentimental value to my friend but after getting a labor quote from a gunsmith he quickly realized he should just buy a new one. Which he did. So the old 10/22 got tossed into a closet and forgotten. I told my friend I thought I could fix it and asked him if I could have it. His dad gave it to me.
So here it is as it was when I brought it home.
I took apart 100% of it and cleaned everything. The bolt was in really bad shape so I swapped it with an extra I had lying around. Also the barrel was clocked to the side a little bit so I had to straighten it out.
Went out back and ran 10 rounds into my wood pile. It's ALIVE!!!
now to fix it up a bit.
I've never been a big fan of painting my guns but this thing was rough. The barrel was pitted and the reciever was all scratched and oxidized so I figured I'd give it a try. I went with Brownells aluma-hyde II and it came out pretty good.
I bought a bx trigger I found in sale and sent it out to brimstone to have a trigger job done on it. That thing is rediculous now. It's like a pound and a half. I also bought one of the Magpul stocks and a vortex rimfire 2-7 scope for it. I think all in all it turned into a pretty sweet rifle.
It was a fun project. It was the first gun I ever shot. And it reminds me of my friend's dad Pat. I have killed hundreds of jackrabbits with it too!
Pat died about a month ago. He will be missed.
