So, there's a chance of a trip to the Surf City area and staying in a beach house located on the waterway. I mean right on it as in the property has a boat ramp on it.

So, my question is this, if we were renters (considered our property during rent time by RE standards), would a fishing license be required to drop a line into the water from said, "private property"?

Got a young one I want to introduce to fishing and this would be a good opportunity.

thanks.

Yep. You aren't fishing in private water. Pay up. Even if you were the property owner. It's still required. Saltwater license. They are different than fresh water now

I have never in my life gotten a salt water fishing license. It's a tax for tax sake. There is no management of salt water going on. What are they doing stocking the ocean? You will be fine no one will know or care. I have been salt water fishing my entire life, no way in the world I'm ever getting one.

We have a house there. My kids and I have fished off of our dock on the canal and never had a license. I've never had a salt water license.

I would think whatever fish and game officials patrol that area have (pun intended) bigger fish to fry. They won't mess with you and a kid on a dock.

Topsail/Surf City are mostly redneck areas. It's our people! You'll be fine.

to me getting fishing/hunting licenses feels a little different then most unnecessary taxes a lot of that money goes to conservation and then the federal government matches that money based on number of licenses sold and population.

There is a ton of management done at the salt water level....they keep an eye on population levels and success of reproduction....then they set the limits for the recreational as well as commercial anglers

like it or not conservation of wildlife is one of the few things the government has done well at.....pay the man for this one

Game Wardens have massive authority. I would just get a saltwater license. They are not expensive and I think you can buy one for a short time like a week or so.

Looks like it’s $6 for a 10-day coastal license for resident, and $11 for non-resident.
I have bought this similar kind of license in SC when on beach trips in the past.

If I recall correctly there is an exemption if you are the property owner, but the salt water temp license is cheap. My Sportsman doesn’t cover salt water so I always have to get one at the coast. Worth it.

Recreational fishing from shore or pier or even a small boat has no real effect on the salt water environment sorry. You pay property taxes on your boat and that is where it should end as far as salt water goes. You want to exclude area from over fishing fine.

I'm so dang old that my Lifetime License grandfathered me in for saltwater. Don't do much fishing at the coast anymore anyway.

Yep better to pay the $6 then the fines you could incur. ;)

  • What happens if I fish without a license?
You'll be charged with a misdemeanor and will receive a fine ranging anywhere from $35 to $500. You may also face up to 30 days in prison.

Don't want to deal with rabbit warden. Some are state, some are federal. The feds are the one's I defently I want to stay away from.

Wish I had known that...if it's a rental as well.

Interesting concept....kinda made me chuckle....."keep an eye on the population of the ocean".....lol.

Thanks for your assistance though.

I paid a $500 fine for having a cab net in the water with the ex's kids in 2014. I mean come on its less than $10.

I am more likely to argue against the property tax and for the fishing license....something about having to pay a tax on something i already bought just pisses me off

plenty of salt water out there that isn't in the ocean.

My dad passed last year but some of my best and earliest memories of us together are surf fishing. He always outfished me too.
