Sorry for wonky title, it's 5am and Im not completely awake yet.
But how will I be informed of permission to travel with a NFA item, just by mail or will I get an email too?
I know with my tax stamp I received via email, and this was also submitted online, so I didnt know if I'd get it that way too.

Following…. I’m curious if the forms are eFile now…. I heard they were moving in that direction, but not that it was available.

You can mail them in, fax them in, or email them in…but they all come back via snail mail.

this was the result of a single 10-page PDF being emailed to them:

But if it’s a short term request, you can call and ask for status. If they say they’ve been approved, I’d feel fine traveling without the paper copy being mailed back to me.

Those above were approved in 8 days…but it took 16 more before I had them in hand.

I mailed mine and they took about a month to come back
and i believe it's entirely possible for AOWs and suppressors to cross state lines without the feds popping out of the weeds 20m over the border to arrest you.

Never received the approval, I resent it with status request, was approved three days after I emailed it. No copy for me. I bring my SBR Roni to Battery Oaks all the time.

That sorta makes sense (I think) -- assuming each of your 10 pages detailed one specific SBR, SBS, (S)MG, AOW, or other destructive device. Since one is supposed to keep the approval letter in the case/carrier with each device (and they likely assume each will have its own case/carrier), it looks like you got 10 approval letters back -- one per item, I'd guess?

That's the ONLY way it makes sense to me, but even then, you'd think they could have saved on the postage, lol.

Who says you have to keep them in the case with each one? I often leave them at home. And if I had a last minute travel and submitted one, I’d definitely travel without receiving it back if I called and confirmed it had been approved.

the instructions say if a carrier is doing the transport then give them the form…but doesn’t say anything about you having to have that form, just that you need the permission 😎

It’s forms for 10 states. And each one has 11 firearms on it.

I got a letter from the ATF that a CFF Member had notified them that they were bringing NFA items here. I thought That was strange. His name and info including info about his "Trust". Curious?????o_O

Suppressor vendors have posted that one's supposed to keep it in the case/carrier (easily verifiable with Google). I know I was verbally told the same when I bought mine. I suspect it's confusion about the meaning of the term 'carrier'?

It doesn't matter to me because I keep a copy of all of my paperwork on me anyway -- just for my own convenience AND to avoid any potential suspicion of impropriety if a LEO wants to poke around. I believe it's saved me grief at multiple ranges when Barney Fife types have expressed interest/concern in some of my more fun range toys! (Thus, if I were traveling interstate with such, I'd be prone to including the approval paperwork in my kit whether I had to or not.)

Ok, so 10 states, 10 responses. I suppose that makes sense, too. You hadn't included that info (10 states) in your original post, so I was trying to match the number of responses to something -- assuming the government had a logical reason for it. Then again, it's the government, so perhaps I shouldn't have assumed there was any rhyme/reason to it...

Suppressors don’t require 5320.20 forms for interstate travel, so that doesn’t make any sense to me.

I agree, and yet ... they do it anyway. Perhaps it's a blanket way of handling all things they might be licensed to deal? That's my only logical conclusion on the matter.

I think it’s as simple as each form gets assigned it’s own control number. That goes on the pink/orange cover sheet that you get with each form that comes back.

I wonder what , if anything, is the penalty for not filing the 5320.20.

It’s gonna depend on whether it’s considered a violation of the National Firearms Act (major penalties), or just a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 922(a)(4) (not sure of penalties).
