👋 Hi CFF! We're proud to introduce DD214 Coffee, a new Veteran-owned coffee business based here in North Carolina. Our roast-to-order coffee is available in three delicious blends and delivered directly to your door. Every bag sold helps support our efforts to end Veteran homelessness. You can read more in Tom Marshall's Veteran Vices column in the current issue of RECOIL Magazine, and be sure to place your order at DD214Coffee.com. ☕️🇺🇸

Cory Grant served in the Navy, as a Petty Officer Second Class Electronics Technician. He was stationed in multiple countries across Western Europe, operating and maintaining microwave and cryptography equipment during the height of the Cold War. He served from 1977 to 1981, after which he was medically discharged.

Now, he continues to serve his fellow veterans through his brand DD-214 coffee. (For the uninitiated, a DD-214 is the Report of Separation that military members are issued when they leave service and return to civilian life.) When asked what prompted him to get into the coffee business, Grant says:

“I wanted to create a sustainable business that could provide jobs for disabled veterans and Gold Star family members, while also supporting homeless veterans. As I reached out to other business owners to get feedback and advice, I found we were almost always meeting up over a cup of coffee. Coffee helps power us through our day, but it also helps power conversations and connections.”

Right now, DD-214 offers three coffee blends. Their dark roast is called “Midrats,” which is military slang for Midnight Rations. A lighter roast called “Reveille” is also available, as is the decaffeinated “Taps” blend. Behind the beans, DD-214 is working diligently to help veterans in need. Their charitable focus right now is an organization known as Off-Road Outreach.

Based in Fayetteville, North Carolina — the home of Fort Liberty, headquarters of both the XVIII Airborne Corps and Army Special Operations Command — Off-Road Outreach focuses on providing homeless vets with food, goods, and services.

You can purchase DD-214 coffee directly from their website, listed at the right. While they’ve started with these three flagship blends, they hope to offer more variety and expand beyond just coffee in the future — with an eye on coffee-infused beer or spirits.

We hope to see the results soon, but, in the meantime, we’ll happily raise a cup of joe to help homeless veterans. - Tom Marshall, RECOIL

Mine (Reveille) came today. All I can say at this point is that it smells terrific!

Can't wait to hear what you think! Thanks for the support.
So...how is it?
Okay, brewed my first pot this morning. Keep in mind that anything I say about it is purely subjective and definitely not the word of an expert. That said, I've been drinking coffee for over six decades and I am a serious coffee drinker. I have also been married for almost five decades, so my coffee has to meet the strict requirements of two people (i.e. I have to make it to suit her and not the "cowboy coffee" style I prefer).

Okay, on to the review, and I'll keep it short, because I'm clearly in a loquacious mood this morning. The "Reveille" blend has a medium dark grind appearance with a very nice aroma. It brews to a nice dark appearance and a pleasant aroma. It has a nice taste with a slight 'earthy' undertone that I can't compare to anything I can think of, but it's very pleasant on the tongue. It has a good 'caffeine rush' which I definitely appreciate, and it passed the wife test, which is a definite plus. Shipping was fast out the door and quick arriving, but then they're in Fayettenam and I'm in Wilson, so that's not much of a measure. All in all, I'd definitely recommend @DD214 Coffee if you're interested in a niche blend from a company with a very supportable mission.

I'll probably try "Midrats" when this bag runs out, and add a review on it later. I'll leave the decaf blend review to one of the other branches of service, as squids just don't do that shite. Kudos to @DD214 Coffee for their mission and their product.
