As pandemic & supply chain shortages forced manufacturers to concentrate on particular calibers over others. Is the rebirth of the 9mm here to rule the earth. Old timers remember when they hit the scene & received all the hype early on but faded away. This was a time when they were trying to move Law enforcement from the old trusty 357 magnum & 38 Special to the higher capacity 9MM, Beretta was all the hype and Glocks were trying to push the market to polymer away from the metal pistols, but S&W & Beretta were top contenders.

I don't know if I want to see an all 9mm world, but the gun cases at any store are full of them. I remember when law enforcement went to them, but then demanded a harder hitting round & the 10mm was born. It was presented to the FBI for testing & after having a tough time with agents qualifying due to the snappy recoil & a few guns having catastrophic failures, the 10mm was chopped down & power factor lowered & the .40 S&W was born to replace the 9mm, now the .40 is killed off by the same 9mm it replaced.

I shot a friendly competition the other day against 4 coworkers for lunch, everyone was shooting 9mm, I have a couple 9mm's, but wanted to be different, so I chose to shoot my 45, just wanted to be different. Don't want to see the other calibers disappear, I like choices.

I don't believe we have any members that were around for the release of 9x19, but some of you are old as dirt, so maybe I'm wrong.

I'm holding out for .30 Super Carry to take over. šŸ˜‰

But who won?

Ok, so who won?

You get an Atta-Boy for the cleverest "9mm vs 45" post ever!

Not so fast. Not till he answers the question.

I'd like to not only hear who won, but what exactly was the competition??

I don't mind that 9mm rules the world. Just keeps some of my other calibers on the shelf longer when there are ammo shortages!

9mm already rules the world. What other pistol caliber is being used in other countries?

With modern ammunition, all pistol calibers have pretty much the same terminal effectiveness. With the lower recoil, easier control and shoot-ability, capacity and lower cost of operation, I don't see the 9mm being replaced any time soon. If anything, we're seeing departments returning to it. And what caliber are new guns being chambered for?

But, I also don't see the other calibers disappearing, as long as customers keep buying.

A new ā€œflavorā€ will come out and try to reinvent the wheel, but it always comes back to the originalā€¦.the 9mm was designed for war and it does it wellā€¦

9mm Parabellum

Dictionary, the word parabellum is part of the Latin phrase "si vis pacem, para bellum." This Latin phrase means "if you want peace, prepare for war.".

Heā€™s referring to the ā€œwonder nineā€ hype of the 1970ā€™s, less about the caliber and more about lightweight high capacity striker fired semi auto pistols.

Ah, gotcha. Wayyy before my time. The .40 was king of the streets by the time I got into guns.

I remember when I first saw it in 81. At the time I was helping/learning about reloading at Carl's Country Gun Shop in Hope Mills, NC.
They called it the "9 Mile-a-meter". I remember it being more aggravating to load cause the cartridges were so small
compared to others. I ended up with a S&W SA/DA of some sort that held 15 rounds IIRC. It didn't hang around long.
Skip ahead 4 decades and now I'm somewhat confident a 9mm can do most of what I want done..

.45 & .357 for me. Been carrying 9mm for years, strictly due to their size/weight/capacity advantage, but am seriously thinking about going back to .45 & .357. Thinking a .45 M2.0 Shield on the hip &/or a .357 LCR in a pocket would be just the ticket for my purposes.

oh yeah, lightweight high capacity striker fired semi auto pistols have completely fallen out of favor since then.

and why all the 40 hate, itā€™s a fine round with good energy and capacity.
my first pistol was a .40 compact. As a new shooter, I understood the hate before I knew there was hate.
I have bought more .40 pistols since then, but I understand the hate.

Post was more about the calibers that are being dropped by manufacturers to concentrate on what the crowd is demanding, understanding that's how they stay in business. My first 9mm was a CZ75 brought in Germany in 1990, gun store got them by the crates, each pistol was packed in a plastic bag with a ton of oil floating in the bag, can't remember what i paid, but not much. No I wasn't around for the birth of the 9mm, but was here when law enforcement & military were switching to them.

For those interested in the office competition, not really a competition that was speed vs accuracy vs type of firearm. It was walk into the range, put your target at 25 yards with no warm up, fire 15 shots, loser by everyone lunch, no time limit, no rush. I did win, 2nd place going to someone i taught to shoot last year from London who never shot a gun prior to moving to the US and has since purchased 2 CZ75's to start his collection upon trying Sig, Glock, M&P, it's all preference.

Not what I said.
Itā€™s not Friday.
So thatā€™s all Iā€™ll say about that.

9mm has definitely "won" the caliber wars if there ever was a war. Certain niche rounds will always exist, but we're already seeing manufacturers drop/reduce support for certain calibers (.40 being the primary example). I'm all about the 9mm only world we're moving towards. I started with .40 and dropped that a long time ago, and I'm currently dropping .45. Don't see 9mm being overtaken until there is some significant technological jump in firearms. There's always some new hyped up round that comes out, but nobody wants to drop $2 a round for 10% more performance.

Anyone still shooting 357sig, or 45gap? Those are the two auto pistol calibers that I see phasing out most quickly. I donā€™t own either, but have components to reload either figuring that one day the pistols might be cheapā€¦probably wrong about that.
