I've got my old chicken coop half torn down and I'm curious about the dirt.

Chickens have lived on it for at least six years.

Is the dirt good for future gardening or do I need to shovel it out and dump something else in it?

What does it taste like? Best way to tell.

But seriously, my neighbor is a serious green thumb and fertilizes with chicken poop that has not completely composted.

Stinks.

Rose Acre Egg Farm is a couple of miles from my house. @Just Tripp , you think you've got flies!?

Anyway, they sell the poop for BIG money, farmers around here put it on the fields, but they were shipping most of it to Georgia to be packaged and sold to golf courses.

I got a couple of buckets for my garden, it is great stuff.

Non aged raw chicken crap can burn plants. Compost piles get hot enough and cook out any of the awfulness in chicken poop that would kill a plant. If you are trying to use it immediately look up 18 or 30 day compost. If you are thinking of using that nutrient rich dirt 6 months to a year from now you will be fine just the way it is.

In my part of the county there is still quite a bit of farming acreage. The poop from the chicken farms is spread on the hay fields twice a year.

I'm thinking I can use a bit of it now to use in the "flower bed" at the new coop, but nothing would be planted in old coop area until I get the rest of the coop demoed and the last half dozen trees down. That'll probably happen over the next four or five months, or at least ove it starts cooling down.

If you can stand beside a pile without tearing up, you should be good to go.

Can a pile of chicken poop look that beautiful?

Funny you mention that. I have a bag of chicken manure fertilizer in the garage, and it occurred to me the other day that may be part of the reason I’ve seen a resurgence of flies as of late. I bought the stuff because a fertilizer salesman friend says regular use tends to drive away nematodes. I don’t know, but I’m fairly certain my front yard has nematodes, and I’m trying to run em off with the chicken poo. We’ll see.
